Member Monday: Trips to Scottsdale and Mont-Tremblant

What are THIRDHOME members saying about their luxury house swap trips this week?

Contemporary Desert Mountain Home | Scottsdale, Arizona

“The hosts met us at their home to share a bottle of wine and explain the specifics of the property. They couldn’t have been more warm, friendly and helpful. The home is spectacular. The quiet serenity is exactly what we needed to unwind. The resort community has everything you could ask for. We enjoyed couples massages at the spa, a half day hike on the beautiful mountain trails, and a first class meal in the clubhouse restaurant. Those experience exceeded all of our expectations.” – Chris

Les Legendes 4-Bedroom Residence | Mont-Tremblant, Canada

“This is our second time staying at Les Legendes and this time was even better than the last. The house is uber comfortable, clean and spacious. The mattress in the master bedroom is the comfiest I’ve ever slept in. The kids loved their bunk bedrooms and the large living room fireplace was kept warm by my attentive husband daily. We loved jumping in the hot tub at night, with all four of our children, then jumping in the snow and back into the hot tub. One of the highlights of the house. It’s super close to the village which we drove to each day for ski lessons, shopping and other fun. We went tobogganing down our drive way with our toboggans bought at the local Canadian tire store in town. The concierge was very attentive and helped with stocking the house of our groceries for us before we arrived and when a light was blown, they came by within minutes to fix it. The wealth of activities around the area are too many to list, but the most fun we had was going snow-tubing nearby, dog-sledding through the forests with our team of 8 Siberian Huskies and of course our ski lessons right in Mont-Tremblant. Can’t wait for our return next winter!” – Jaime

San Miguel with THIRDHOME: Guest Blogger Lawrence Grossman’s Trip

Lawrence Grossman shares his experience staying at Casa Carino in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

img_3963

Casa Carino San Miguel“I have traveled across Mexico for 4 decades now and I don’t believe there is a more beautiful city in the country than San Miguel de Allende located in the state of Guanajuato.   In 2013 Conde Nast Traveler named San Miguel the “Readers Choice Award World’s Best City” and I have to concur. My friends and I just completed a week in a glorious THIRDHOME, Casa Carino, located about a 10-minute walk from the downtown plaza. The residence itself is part castle, part mansion, and part museum with unique Mexican art and artifacts scattered throughout the home.   The master suite was large, cozy, and difficult to leave in the morning. There were numerous sitting areas throughout the house with fireplaces and comfortable places to read talk or play games and we took advantage of all the spots in the course of our week. The outdoor terraces at all levels of the house gave us an outstanding view of the city and the downtown churches.

We were told that the home is often the site of weddings and other special events with the pool being covered and turned into a dance floor. The Casa Carino staff were friendly, professional and full of knowledge of what to do in town, and they did everything possible to make our stay perfect. Our Cocinera (chef), Alicia, prepared meals to rival the best restaurants downtown. Pepe and Abraham ensured we were well versed in all that San Miguel had to offer and even provided transportation to selected events.San Miguel Market

Each day we ventured out to explore a different part of the city and the surrounding area. The weekly Tuesday market at the top of the hill was crowded and bustling with fresh produce, bargain clothes, electronics, Mexican candies, live music, as well as chickens, rabbits, and roosters for sale.   The smell of fresh tacos, grilled chicken, carnitas and tamales was everywhere and whole families took advantage of the market to shop, eat and spend time together. It is a photographer’s dream as the market is so colorful and full of energy and people enjoying themselves.

Gil GutierrezOne of the highlights of the trip was an outing to a ranch outside of town named Zandunga that featured a concert with Mexican guitarist Gil Gutierrez and an awesome band playing latin jazz. Gil was an 18 year-old street musician who was “discovered” by Doc Severinson from the Tonight Show. Together, they toured around the world as part of the San Miguel Quintet. The 3-hour concert was fabulous and we all had a chance to talk with Gil and his wife about life in San Miguel. Another day trip into the countryside took us to the restaurant/hotel Nirvana (also a THIRDHOME property) where we took advantage of the spa and a large thermal hot springs fed swimming pool. Following a most relaxing day of great food massages and outstanding service we “melted” into our cab and returned to Casa Carino.

San Miguel DowntownFinally, we always returned to the bustling El Centro (dow ntown) to visit the many shops, art galleries and restaurants that are the heart of San Miguel. Saturday night in particular is a “can’t miss” stop at El Jardin (the downtown plaza). Mariachi bands play at all corners of the downtown and the night we were there three wedding parties celebrated with friends and family a
t Parroquia de San Miguel, the 17th century iconic church in the middle of town. It is “people watching” at its best and great fun to feel like a part of Mexican culture.

This was not my first trip to San Miguel, but it was an exceptional experience, in large part due to the once in a lifetime opportunity to reside at the lovely Casa Carino home.”

What are the top ways to be a great luxury home exchange guest?

As a reciprocal home exchange club, we rely on our community of members to both graciously host guests in their homes but also be great guests when traveling. Here’s what our host members are saying about their experiences with guest members while participating in luxury home exchanges:

“Maureen and her friend were wonderful guests. Maureen is a delightful person and so easy to talk to about arrangements. As a plus, she and her friend left the house totally immaculate. It was a delight to have them both and I would welcome them back without reservation at any time.”

“They were a pleasure to meet and are most welcome to return to our home at any stage. As they were our first guests since recently joining THIRDHOME they have set the bar very high for our next guests who we are expecting shortly. Any small reguests we made in terms of arrival, departure and property management issues were followed to the letter. We think they enjoyed their stay as they very generously left a bottle of Irish for the next occupants of the Cottage!”

“We were very pleased to have such a lovely family visit our THIRDHOME property. Their enthusiasm to take in what Cape Cod has to offer was fantastic. They were here for a short time but seemed to pack in horseback riding on the beach, a seal tour, beach time and in addition sample the restaurants! They left the house in beautiful shape. I would welcome them back at any time. It was as if good friends were staying at the house. The emails and discussions with Jackie to plan her family’s get away was fun and now I feel as though I have some new friends!”

What leads to an outstanding guest review like above? Here is a list of the top ways to impress when staying at a fellow THIRDHOME member’s property:

  • Participate in timely communication: Communication is very important during the home swapping process. Always confirm arrival and departure times with the host member to ensure a smooth transition for using the home during your trip.
  • Respect the property as if it was your own: As a luxury homeowner, you already take pride in keeping your home nicely kept. Extend that same respect to your host member’s property, by treating it as if it was your own property.
  • Tell the host member if there are any issues: If there are any issues while staying at the property, kindly bring it to the host member’s attention. They may have no idea it is an issue to begin with and will appreciate knowing!
  • Do not bring a pet without prior permission: Always ask before you bring a pet along on your vacation with you, as some are sensitive to having pets in their house due to allergies or decor considerations.
  • Be polite to all staff at the property: When a property has staff on-site, treat them with kindness and be sure to adequately tip them for their service.
  • Leave a review about your home exchange experience: Hosts love to hear feedback about their home and stories of what you did in the area!

Following through with these few tips will leave the owners wanting to swap with you again! Ready to book your stay and be a great home exchange guest? Click here to view weeks available to book with a THIRDHOME membership. Remember, you must be logged in to your account to see availability.

Zebra safari

Guest Blogger Jacqueline Roth shares her experience at Camdeboo Game Reserve with THIRDHOME

Jacqueline Roth shares her family’s experience staying at Camdeboo Manor  for a safari trip in this guest blog post.

Screen Shot 2016-07-27 at 11.28.06 AM

This June my family and I embarked on what would be one of the most extraordinary and thrilling
vacations of our lives. We arrived at the Mount Camdeboo in Graaf-Reinet just before sunset and
we were immediately taken back by the 35,000 acres of varying terrain and spectacular views. The
accommodations at the Manor were incredible, an old farmhouse restored to perfection with a keen
attention to detail, and a staff so attentive you could never go hungry or without a drink in your
hand. While the five star accommodations were incredible, what will be most memorable is the
incredible wildlife and being able to share this once in a lifetime experience with my family.

Screen Shot 2016-07-27 at 11.29.30 AMWhile staying at the property we were
able to enjoy two game drives per day;
one early in the morning and one in the
late afternoon. The safari truck had no
problem going up and down the
mountains, some of which were over
4,000 ft. high. Our guide Dane was
extremely knowledgeable and
informative, making each drive a unique
adventure. He also wasn’t afraid to test us on what we learned about each animal.
Screen Shot 2016-07-27 at 11.29.40 AMOn the game drives we were able to
find giraffe, rhino, kudu, spring bok,
wild boar, zebra, warthogs, baboons,
and, my personal favorite, cheetah.
One of the most memorable moments during our safari was our run in with a
female cheetah and her three cubs. I
can honestly say that there is nothing more thrilling than standing 5 feet from a wild cheetah who is trying to protect her cubs.

Screen Shot 2016-07-27 at 11.29.50 AMWhile every meal at the manor was exceptional, one of my favorites was a barbecue style dinner in
the boma. When we arrived back from our
afternoon game drive, we were escorted to the
backyard where the staff had prepared a
tradition, candlelit braai. We enjoyed predinner
drinks by the fire and then a delicious
dinner of fire grilled meats and vegetables.
Afterwards, we had hot tea and homemade
cakes for dessert. It was a spectacular evening
and a great way to experience a traditional
African meal.

Screen Shot 2016-07-27 at 11.30.03 AMDuring our last night at the manor the
proprietor, Ian, stopped by for an afternoon
drink. We talked for hours about the history of the private reserve. We learned about the
“Battle of Paardefontein”, a historic Anglo
Boer war fought on the property, and about
the owner’s efforts in protecting the Rhino
species. It was so great hearing his story and
how passionate he was about wildlife
preservation. Also, it seems he has big plans
to make Mount Camdeboo even bigger and better in years to come. I couldn’t recommend a place
any stronger. Thank you THIRDHOME for making our dream vacation a reality.

Summer in the Rocky Mountains with THIRDHOME CEO Wade Shealy

You may think the Rocky Mountains region is just for skiing, but it is the perfect home exchange option for the summer! Experience the Rockies while the weather is warm and participate in hiking, mountain biking, fly-fishing, white water rafting, and more! Recently, THIRDHOME Founder and CEO Wade Shealy and his travel group spent time exploring the Rockies and stayed in a member’s luxury villa at The Residences at The Chateaux in Deer Valley, Utah.

What was his experience like? Two-time Olympian Kaylin Richardson will walk you through what great activities await when you home swap to the Rocky Mountains during the summer:

Read in Wade’s own words why a summer trip to the Rocky Mountains is a perfect home exchange experience:

“Although I have visited Park City and Deer Valley many times to ski, I had never spent much time out there in the summer. My son, his mom and I decided to give a summer trip to the area a try. WOW, we all agreed, best vacation ever! Once you go out in the summer it will be your favorite place, I promise!  Our first morning fly-fishing the Mid Provo river, we landed 30 Brown trout. My son Adam brought in the largest at 19 inches and 5 lbs. Then a short plane ride landed us outside Vernal Utah to float the famous Green River. The class 3 rapids and the scenery made it the most memorable rafting we have ever experienced. Once we pulled out of the river we visited Dinosaur National Monument and saw a wall of hundreds of bones that were collected during a flood that occurred around 150 million years ago. On a scale of 1-10, this vacation was an 11. Grab a week now and experience the Rockies, you will be glad you did.”
