I was fortunate enough to be the lucky winner of an incredible Amazon River Voyage at the 2018 THIRDHOME Member Appreciation Event hosted in Nashville.  Although visiting the Amazon was never at the top of my bucket list, I was so excited and in total shock when Liz Bates emailed to inform we had won. We were in the midst of planning a family wedding but definitely couldn’t pass up this amazing experience. Now having been, I’d recommend that everyone add Peru to their bucket lists!

The voyage was operated by International Expeditions which is a first class and top-notch tour operator. Everything was handled impeccably, from escorting us through the airport to private transportation to the hotels and the ship. So, if anyone has any concerns about navigating a foreign country, they need not worry, as IE was on top of everything, getting us where we needed to be when we needed to be there.Hot Tub on the Zafiro Yactch Skiff boat on the Amazon riverJudy Stoopack in a ricksha Dining table on the Zafiro Yacht

Once we were on-board the ship the attentive guest services exceeded our expectations. The 24 staff members welcomed each passenger with open arms and fully immersed each passenger into their unique culture. We loved learning about each staff members’ personal story, each serving as its own testimonial for the great pride they all share for their country and its culture. One of the main highlights of the voyage was the extraordinary Peruvian musical and dance performances by the staff each night.  The ship itself was beautifully decorated and completely renovated. The spa room had floor to ceiling glass windows so that one is able to look out over the river while enjoying your massage treatments.  The main dining room was spacious, and allowed passengers to have flexible seating to dine with each other in small communal groups or privately as a couple for more intimacy.

If you love birding this is a must do experience for you! I was never a bird enthusiast but on this trip I became more and more invested into this unique hobby of feathered friends, as the majority of wildlife we encountered on this voyage were local indigenous birds. So, be sure to pack really good binoculars and a powerful zoom lens with your camera! I’d have to say that the educational aspect of this experience was most memorable. The on-board lectures were very informative and as passengers we were able to gain a well-rounded understanding of Peru’s culture, biodiversity, local communities and economy, and how these are intertwined with the annual rise and fall of the river during the rainy and dry seasons. Not to mention we were on-board with passengers from the Smithsonian, so many of our conversations yielded deep discussion of each lecture and education excursions, such as our local children’s school visit, a nature hike through the Peruvian jungle, and a unique encounter with a local shaman.

We also decided to add on a trip extension to Machu Picchu, which I highly recommend. It was a completely different experience that complimented the Amazon voyage perfectly, almost like visiting two completely different countries. The extension was also operated by IE and was all-inclusive, with five star accommodations and gourmet meals throughout the entire tour. The food was so delicious that my wife and I joked that we basically ate our way through Peru, even though were rarely eat 3 course meals breakfast, lunch and dinner.

We also were lucky enough to have an amazing private guide that escorted us to all the most incredible attractions including the Sacred Valley, Aguas Calientes, Cusco, and the Maras Salt Flats. From the beginning to the end of the journey, especially the extraordinary Vistadome Train ride to the peak of Machu Picchu, we were truly unprepared for the rugged beauty of the valley and the awe-inspiring experiences we encountered.

Guest blogger Larry Grossman shares his Galapagos voyage experience aboard The M/V Evolution.

The Evolution Yacht in the Galapagos

Be inspired by this extraordinary journey in the Galapagos by THIRDHOME Adventures & Custom Travel.

Penguins and sea lions and whales, oh my! Clearly, we weren’t in Oz, but had instead landed off the coast of Ecuador in The Galapagos Islands aboard the International Expedition’s M/V Evolution. For seven days, twenty Americans, two Canadians and three Peruvians shared an incredible journey in the world made famous by Charles Darwin in the 1800’s. Today, The Galapagos Islands are operated as a national park by Ecuador with over 225,000 visitors a year. If you love animals, both on land and under the sea, this is the voyage for you.

Larry Grossman and giant turtle Adult sea lion and baby sea lion

CAUTION: THIS IS NOT A SIT BY THE POOL AND SIP MARGARITAS VACATION.

No swimming pools, no bingo and not even a beach chair anywhere. If you’re looking for bars, nightlife and live music go to Cancún and skip this place. We hiked, we snorkeled, kayaked and then hiked again, this time over a field of black lava.  Picture a Discovery Channel documentary, narrated by Richard Attenborough, populated with doe-eyed animals, closer in resemblance to Disney characters than wild animals.  On our journey we encountered Sammy the lovable sea lion, Alfie the grumpy albatross, Toni the temperamental tortoise and Ichabod the evil iguana who spits salt water when you get too close.

Local Ecuadorian family Iguana on grass

Baby sea lion on a rock  The evolution interior common area

After 7 days, 452 nautical miles and 20 panga (zodiac boat) rides we were worn out and giddy from all we had experienced.  We visited at close range with giant tortoises, sea turtles, reef sharks, penguins, sea lions, birds of all kinds from the blue-footed boobies (a real species) to flamingos, and quite possibly the ugliest animal on the planet: the black and grey marine iguana.  As if that wasn’t enough, we closed out the voyage with a salute from 5 orca whales, one of whom came within 5 feet of our panga.  Clearly, these protected Galapagos animal residents had no fear of we visiting humans.  It was their world and they knew that despite our abundance of cameras and binoculars pointed at them we were no threat.  In fact, the sea lions seemed to take great pleasure swimming circles around the round humans stuffed in wetsuits wearing the funny glasses.

Kudos to our guides Christina and Boli (named after Simón Bolívar of course) and all the staff on the M/V Evolution for great customer service and great food.  The M/V Evolution was a cozy place to hang out and get to know our fellow boat mates while learning important information about the volcanic Galapagos terrain and the indigenous animals (according to Christina, Sesame Street’s Big Bird is an albatross).  We even got treated to an evening of Ecuadorian music and dancing with complementary shots of Caña Manabito, a local spirit.

This was my second International Expedition arranged through THIRDHOME and it won’t be my last (read more about Larry’s experience aboard the Peruvian Amazon Voyage).  My suggestion to fellow club members is get to know Liz Bates, travel agent extraordinaire, and let her make your travel life easier.  I’m old enough to remember a time before Expedia and Travelocity when travel agents ruled the travel world.  There’s something very reassuring knowing it’s still possible to engage a real, live, breathing human being who can help plan and navigate a big trip from beginning to end.  With Liz’s help I can keep whittling down my personal travel bucket list that is loosely based on the National Geographic Traveler Magazine’s “50 Places of a Lifetime”.  27 down so far!

Her family just returned from a stay at Sky 230, where she was able to make use of the spacious dining area and gourmet kitchen while preparing Thanksgiving dinner. With room for 8 guests, this property is perfect for a family escape to the coast. Even during November, Florida can deliver a balmy 80-degree (F°) day, allowing you to cruise around the canals or watch the sun set by the beach. Consider Sky 230, year-round, for your next Florida stay.

THIRDHOME member Meredith says, “My family had a wonderful stay at Sky 230 in Fort-Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. What a cute beach town! The home is new (2016), very modern, clean, and well stocked with all you would need (cooking supplies, towels, sheets)…We would definitely stay here again!! Thank you, Lauren, for such an incredible stay and making our Thanksgiving family vacation so memorable!” click here to read more of Meredith’s review.

A rooftop hot tub and indoor pool ensures that this home is entertaining year-round.

Located on the main canal of Prinsengracht, this renovated property is is located in the heart of Amsterdam. This elevated corner property features 7 windows that offer expansive views of the canal area. The home is also near the central Spiegelgracht canal, a hot spot for artists, galleries and coffee shops. With room for 4 people, this property is perfect for a week-long exploration of Amsterdam and all the art and culture it has to offer.

THIRDHOME member Leslie says, “Our stay at the High End Canal House was fantastic. Our host could not have been nicer, and the location was fantastic. We walked all over the great city of Amsterdam, enjoying the great vibrancy, food, beauty, culture and museums. When we ventured out of the city, public transportation was easy and nearby. After full days of sightseeing, we came home to the well appointed flat that was charming and cozy, but the perfect size for two couples. We stayed on the run because there was much to see, but we would have also been content to simply enjoy the lovely views from the windows of boats meandering along the canals and the locals on bicycles.” click here to read more of Leslie’s review.

The Landmark Resort of Cozumel | Cozumel, Mexico

This resort property, on the coast of Cozumel, is a welcome reprieve from the stresses of city life. The Landmark of Cozumel is an upscale oceanview resort overlooking Dzul Ha Reef and featuring a gorgeous beachfront. 5-star amenities such as the beach club, live entertainment, a stunning pool area, fitness center and daily maid service make The Landmark of Cozumel the perfect place for a tropical escape. Their 3-bedroom residences can sleep up to 6 people. Their 2-bedroom residences can sleep up to 4 people. If you’re looking for a sun-soaked beachside escape with full-resort amenities, look no further than The Landmark Resort of Cozumel.

THIRDHOME member Carl says, “My wife and actually stayed at the Landmark Resort for 3 weeks in unit (510). We had seen pictures before we booked the stay. But the pictures did not do it justice. Our condominium was on the 5th floor and had an ocean view from each bedroom. The place was huge and very modern. Marble and tile everywhere. The beds, all kings, were very comfortable. The furniture was very nice and all 3 bedrooms had a 55-inch smart TV. The gym was nice and I used it almost every day. The pool area was so nice you did not want to leave. The grounds were nicely kept and there was 24-hour security. But all of these amenities did not make the stay a great experience. It was the staff! Adriana, Ramon, Jair and Paola without a doubt made our stay an experience we will always remember.” click here to read more of Carl’s review.

THIRDHOME members and good friends, Phyllis & Don Feil and Tamra & Charlie O’Hara, embarked on a journey together through Spain and Portugal. This Curated Journey, designed by THIRDHOME Custom Travel, allowed each member to enjoy their vacation without the hassle of planning. These 4 members were lucky enough to experience luxury accommodations in historic Paradores, once lived in by European royals.

Phillis Feil provided a first-hand account of her Curated Journey to Spain and Portugal. Keep reading for her account of this amazing experience.

We just returned from a trip of a lifetime to Spain and Portugal, and can’t thank Liz Bates enough for putting together a perfect vacation.  From the first time I contacted THIRDHOME, until the very last detail, the entire planning process seemed way too easy. Liz did an incredible job fulfilling our expectations, including transportation, rental car, and accommodations. She saved us hours of research and planning. I highly recommend the THIRDHOME Adventures & Custom Travel.

Gaudi Architecture Barcelona, SpainPark Guell Gaudi Spain

During our 14 day journey thru Spain and Portugal, we stayed at beautiful Paradores along the way. (One of the best kept secrets of Spain and Portugal, Paradores offer luxury accommodations in historic buildings or castles built for european royalty). Every stop was a new and exciting experience. From Barcelona up to the wine country of Rioja, down to Toledo, Granda, Ronda, Malaga, and a quick flight to Portugal, it was hard to say which Paradore was our favorite.  Each location was first class with captivating views and rich heritage. Our first stop was in Barcelona, after disembarking from a Mediterranean cruise. Liz had a private driver waiting to pick us up and drop us off at our hotel.  Then we were off to explore the sites of the city. Local markets, cathedrals, and parks were all within walking distance from our location.

Parador Santo Domingo, SpainParador Santo Domingo, Spain

In Barcelona we picked up the rental car, and began our Spain road trip. First stop was the Rioja wine region. The scenery was hard to believe. One rolling vineyard after another and such an easy drive. The Paradore we stayed in was on the path of the Pilgrim Walk, or El Camino de Santiago, which was an added bonus. We really enjoyed seeing and meeting people from all over the world.

Toledo Cathedral, SpainToledo, Spain

After spending a few days in La Rioja we packed the car and headed south to Toledo.  The Paradore was located at the top of the hill, overlooking the historic Toledo UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Paradore restaurant had the best views of Toledo, and served delicious authentic Spanish cuisine. A tour of the famous Saint Mary of Toledo Cathedral was the highlight of our visit. Its a must see if you travel to Toledo. Words can not express the beauty.

Toledo, Spain Sierra Nevada Mountains Olive Trees, Spain

After spending a few days in Toledo we packed the car again, and headed south to Granada. The drive thru the Sierra Nevada Mountains was amazing, passing by hundreds of olive tree orchards and vineyards. We had no idea that olive trees lived up to 1,500 years old. We arrived a few hours later and checked into the Paradore, which was located inside the Alhambra, and just steps away from the front entrance.  The following day we spent touring the Alhambra, General Gardens,  and Moorish heritage. So many beautiful things to see!

Paradore in Ronda, Spain Cliff in Ronda, Spain

Next stop was Ronda, Spain, located around one hour from Granada. This was one of our favorite Paradores. The views from our balconies were like a postcard. Ronda is so picturesque and such a charming place to visit. There were many restaurants and stores to shop within a two minute walk of our location.  The town is gleaming from the white buildings and cobblestone streets.

Cliff view of Ronda, Spain Ocean view of Malaga, Spain

After leaving Ronda, we headed to the Mediterranean coastline city of Malaga, the birth place of Picasso. We stayed at the Paradore Malaga, which overlooked a bull fight arena and cruise port. Once again, we were very happy wth the accommodations, views, and incredible Spanish cuisine offered on property. We got lucky and arrived the day of a large festival celebration. We attended the festivities offered by the Paradore restaurant. What a way to end our journey through Spain….. with fireworks and an amazing five course Spanish dinner.

Parador Restaurant special evening dinner Fireworks Show during Dinner
The following morning we boarded a quick fight to Lisbon Portugal to spend our last few days of vacation.  Lisbon is spread across hillsides and overlooks the shoreline. From Gothic cathedrals, to castles, and museums there is so much to see. Not to mention the waterfront square with all the incredible seafood restaurants to choose from. We enjoyed the fresh seafood platters and romantic ambiance.

Building in Lisbon, PortugalThe Feil's and the O'Hara's in Lisbon, Portugal

To sum it all up, Liz Bates did an outstanding job of putting our dream vacation together. We would do it all over again and not change a thing. It was hard to leave and come back home after experiencing the beauty that Spain and Portugal has to offer.  Back to Houston and reality for now.  Cheers until our next incredible journey through THIRDHOME Adventures & Custom Travel.

If I had to pick one (favorite destination), it would be the The Ritz-Carlton Destination Club in Aspen. I went for two weeks in July 2017. Then I went back in September 2018 for the fall colors. Any personal achievements you’d like to share?

Jokingly I said at the beginning of 2018, 52 trips in 52 weeks! So far as of September 23rd, I will have traveled part (or all) of 30 weeks. PLUS 8 more trips before December 31 scheduled. Not all through THIRDHOME, but almost 1/3 of them.

I travel more! Many of the times, the THIRDHOME becomes the destination. I love just hanging out and fully enjoying the home. I love the variety of homes I stay at. I now always have to have a kitchen! I look at THIRDHOME‘s website first.

Renu Bonner THIRDHOME

The twice daily maid service at the The Ritz-Carlton Destination Club in Aspen. The customized and personal service that is provided.

What makes a THIRDHOME stay so special?

I love the way I feel when staying at a THIRDHOME, just like I do at home, totally comfortable.

Renu Bonner THIRDHOME

How is staying in a THIRDHOME different than other types of accommodations?

I enjoy the personal relationship I build with the homeowners when I stay at their place and those that stay at my place.

How would you describe THIRDHOME to a friend?

Great way to travel and get more value out of my second home. Best deal ever! I would not be able to or even want to (financially) stay at the homes I have stayed at.

Renu Bonner THIRDHOME

What’s the most memorable restaurant you’ve eaten at during one of your trips?

Both trips to Cancun, dined many times at El Fish Fritanga (not 100% sure of name). The fresh seafood platter was AMAZING- the variety, the cost, and amount of food and dining with your toes in the sand made it totally memorable! Last trip, went 3 nights!

Any travel tips for fellow members?

Stay flexible and open minded about when and where.

We were most delighted with the Chateau…It is a large, beautiful place to stay and convenient to the many wineries that are scattered around the area. They had a wine expert who we hired to take us to several of them, and it was our top day. The rooms are spacious and beautifully done. The bathrooms were modernized which was important for us, as the original house was built in the 1400’s, I believe. We had one day of skeet shooting on the property, and the chef prepared 2 meals for us in the house…It was a delightful historic place on a beautiful piece of property and I recommend it highly with 5 stars!” click here to read more of Alyse’s review.
