Keys for a Cause: Jack & Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation

Every time a family goes on vacation, through THIRDHOME or otherwise, memories are made. But what are those memories? Are they the neatly stacked photo albums in your credenza? Are they the postcards with hastily written wish you were here’s sent from your favorite oceanside boardwalk? Technically memories are the firing of billions of neurons encoding the mundane moments as well as the precious, while never being able to store them with complete accuracy.  But there are some memories that never seem to fade, for instance, the last memory of a loved one.

The Jack & Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation is in the business of creating everlasting memories for families affected by a terminal cancer diagnosis through the gift of travel.

THIRDHOME is partnering with Jack & Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation (a highly respected national 501 c3 non-profit) to impact the lives of children suffering from the terminal cancer diagnosis of a parent. The foundation was born in 2006 soon before founder, Jon Albert, lost his wife to stage IV metastatic breast cancer. His children had to endure the unimaginable loss of a parent, but Jon knew strong memories of special (positive, FUN) times with their mother would be their greatest inheritance.

Since 2006, JAJF has partnered with leading oncologists around the country such as MD Anderson, Vanderbilt, Sarah Cannon, Duke, City of Hope, University of Chicago, Dana Farber, Duke, Emory, Arizona Cancer Ctr., Mayo and Moffitt who prescribe their patients for WOW! Experiences®. And WOW! is a very apt word! JAJF continues to send these sweet families to fabulous destinations all across the United States.  Oncologists throughout the country believe in prescribing much needed “cancer time-outs”. But too many families don’t get to enjoy a vacation from cancer due to the fact that their finances have been depleted by treatment costs. Jack & Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation enables families to take that much-needed (and now prescribed as part of their treatment protocol) trip as evidenced in one of their mantras, “Treat the families; not the cancer®”

How does THIRDHOME fit in?

But the THIRDHOME team wanted to be part of creating indispensable memories for families in need.  The Jack & Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation was the perfect fit for this kind of endeavor, and a partnership soon followed. THIRDHOME, with the help of its members, wants to curate everlasting memories for families affected by terminal cancer diagnosis. Together Jack & Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation and THIRDHOME will be treating the families; not the cancer.

As a cancer survivor himself, THIRDHOME Founder and CEO, Wade Shealy has a special place in his heart for this organization. After a diagnosis in December of 2015, his perspective on life quickly changed. He quickly realized how easy it can be to take family time for granted. Happily, the cancer was successfully removed and his own family vacations are now taken with much more gratitude.

Sign up for our Keys for a Cause program! Keys for a Cause is a new program in which members volunteer weeks at their property to families who have been prescribed a trip through Jack and Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation. THIRDHOME will then use those weeks to create the trip of a lifetime for these families. Members whose homes are selected to host a Jack and Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation family will earn the normal Key value for the week provided plus a bonus Key. With these weeks, THIRDHOME‘s Travel & Concierge department will curate the trip of a lifetime.
