Made popular in Europe, plunge pools are becoming a popular alternative to larger and harder to maintain pools. They also help home owners save big on water, space and electricity.
According to Home Advisor, a standard in-ground pool can cost up to $57,000, while plunge pools cap out around $25,000. An average or mid-sized pool will typically exceed 600 square feet. Plunge pools are loosely defined as being less than 600 square feet and being less than 6 feet deep. If you’re looking to add a dose of luxury to your backyard without breaking the bank, a thoughtfully laid out plunge pool might do the trick. Or you might just want to jump into a few of the pools below during your next stay.
Check out our Top 6 ThirdHome Plunge Pool Picks to inspire your next stay or home renovation project:
Private Island of Little Harvest Caye
Capping off an amazing open-air living space is Little Harvest Caye’s plunge pool. Featuring stunning ocean views, in-water seating and a volleyball setup, this plunge pool is designed for summer fun and relaxation. This pool is perfect for poolside piña coladas and endless sunbathing, while keeping fresh water requirements low. Fresh water is a commodity on many salt water islands, especially the private ones. That’s why this plunge pool design works so perfectly for Little Harvest Caye. It’s just enough pool to cool off, have fun and feel like you’re staying in true luxury.
Two plunge pools for the price of one! This Cabo San Lucas property features two kidney shaped pools that jut into the coast, giving the illusion that the surf could hit you at any moment. Even better, one of these pools is actually a hot tub. This is a popular combination for fans of Contrast Therapy–a post workout technique in which athletes immerse themselves in extremely cold water followed by hot water. Believed to increase circulation and help the muscles relax, Contrast Therapy has also found popularity in an audience apart from professional athletes: luxury homeowners. Homes like Casa Arrecifes allow guests to unwind in unique fashion and with incredible views.

Como Uma Canggu-Luxury Penthouse
Welcome to the most romantic plunge pool in Bali. Located at the Como Uma Canggu beachfront resort, these penthouse plunge pools are the best thing to happen to a master suite since heated floors and in-room jacuzzis. On the larger end of the plunge pool spectrum, this pool measures in at about 540 square feet. Step through the Master suite’s sliding glass doors and you’ll notice the 45 degree receding roofline adorned by green ivy. Giving you the best of both worlds, this roof design keeps the deck area partially shaded while letting the pool be fully exposed to the sun and dramatic ocean views. If you’re looking for an idyllic tropical getaway look no further. You may consider installing one off your master bedroom back home after experiencing this kind of luxury first-hand.
Facing Kalkan Bay, this Turkish Villa pool terrace is a refreshing mix of modern and old world charm. Featuring a blue-tile infinity plunge pool, this villa’s pool area pushes the limits of what a plunge pool can be. Rooftop pools usually require great feats of engineering and architecture, considering the additional load placed on the structure. And retrofitting a property for a rooftop pool usually isn’t worth the trouble, much less building an infinity pool (another mechanical feat). That’s why there’s so much to appreciate when staying at Ketchy Villa. The owners managed to transform a classically designed seaside Turkish home into a modern luxury holiday retreat, in large part due to the rooftop plunge pool feature. Be sure to consult an architect or engineer before installing one on your roof!
If you thought Ketchy Villa’s rooftop design was daring, consider swimming over Las Vegas at this plunge pool at the Palms Place Penthouse. A cantilevered t-shape design allows this tiny pool to hover over the city, making for stunning city views. If you have a fear of heights, the transparent bottom may shock you at first. But the surrounding glass safety walls and reinforced tile entry will soon redirect your attention to the bright lights of Vegas. The 1,000 square foot balcony also features living and entertaining space around the plunge pool. If you’re looking for unique plunge pool design, this is the pinnacle.
Palm Springs Modern
Simple, modern and beautiful. This Palm Springs home features an elegant plunge pool that blends seamlessly into the landscaping. Earth tones, rock and desaturated greens dot the hillside complementing the pool’s blue, and the patio’s white, umber and sienna decor. It’s no wonder Elle Decor and Land Rover both used this location for brand photo shoots. The desert locale is perfect weather for enjoying a refreshing splash. The pool also has a heating feature for cold desert nights when the stars are at their peak visibility. If you’re looking for a subtle touch of luxury that can fit into most residential designs, this plunge pool is the perfect choice.

Long gone are the days of the meticulously arranged holiday scrapbook and the vacation slideshow you forced your neighbors to endure.
In the age of social media, sharing your most precious memories with friends and family has never been easier. But for some, adopting new technologies can seem daunting. That’s why we’re going to walk, step-by-step, through how to post your vacation albums on both Facebook and Instagram.
There are many other social media mediums available, but it’s most likely that your friends and family are on one of these two platforms. As of April 7, 2021, Pew Research reported that 69% of Americans are on Facebook, and 40% are on Instagram. Plus, uploading your favorite pictures and videos will make sure that your memories outlive the lifespan of your camera, phone, or scrapbook.
So you want to share your latest ThirdHome trip with your friends. Where do you start?
Step 1: If you don’t already have a Facebook/Instagram account, make one!
Creating a Facebook account is easy, and only requires a valid email address.
To create a Facebook account:
- Go to www.facebook.com or download the Facebook app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android).
- Enter your name, email, or mobile phone number, password, date of birth, and gender.
- Click Create an Account.
- To finish creating your account, you need to confirm your email or mobile phone number.
- Start adding your friends and family to your network!
- You can now use your Facebook credentials to create an Instagram page.

Step 2: Start posting!
Both platforms are very intuitive and easy to use. But some nuances of posting on each platform should be noted.
How to post your vacation photos on Facebook
At the top of your Facebook feed, you’ll see the “Make Post” box. Click “Photo/Video Album.”

You will then be prompted to select images from your computer or cell phone. Select the photos you would like to share with your friends and family.

After you’ve selected your pictures, you can customize your post by tagging people and locations and writing captions.

Pro tip: Be sure to add a destination to your album, so your friends and family know where you were! You should also tag any friends that went on the trip with you. You can also tag the ThirdHome page to make sure we see how much fun you had on your holiday.
Before you post, make sure your share settings are to your liking. You can share your album with the world, with just your friends, a select group of friends, or you can keep the album entirely private. Once you’ve selected your privacy settings, click “Post.”

Viola!
Now let’s talk about Instagram.
How to post your holiday pictures on Instagram
Instagram is an image-driven social platform. It’s not very conducive for sharing entire vacation albums but does work well for showcasing the best images from your trip. It’s also important to note that Instagram is a mobile-first social media site, meaning that it’s built to be used primarily on your phone. It is possible to post on a computer, but many of the features that make Instagram so great aren’t present on the browser version. So keeping this in mind:
You will first need to download the Instagram app in the app store.

Once you’re logged into Instagram, press the Plus (+) button at the very bottom of the screen.

Now you can upload a picture or video from your trip by selecting a file from your camera roll.

You can also use Instagram to edit and modify images.

Once you’ve picked and edited a photo you can enter a caption, tag @thirdhome and hashtag #StayWorldly to share your trip with the ThirdHome community. Be sure to tag the people who traveled with you and tag the location to inspire other would-be travelers. You can also choose to share this image on Facebook, as well.

Other tips for posting on Social Media
Sharing your posts on social media is even better when you share them with friends. Be sure to follow your friends, family, and travel partners. You can also follow our accounts on Facebook and Instagram.

In Sonoma County, between Sepestapol and Santa Rosa, sits The Russian River Valley American Viticultural Area. Producing one-sixth of Sonoma County’s wine, this region is known for its cool temperature, ocean breezes and delicious varietals. Spared largely from the 2017 California wildfires, these wineries continue to produce world-class wines while giving back to local organizations such as the Redwood Credit Union’s North Bay Fire Relief Fund to help displaced residence. Visit Sonoma County and support local wine producers during your next stay. Each bottle purchased leaves a real impact for vintners and local Sonoma businesses.
With over 300 wineries in the area, choosing the right wineries to visit during your stay can be difficult.
But don’t worry, we’ve done the heavy lifting for you. We’ve discovered 5 vineyards that are a must when visiting the best wineries in The Russian River Valley. Check out our picks below and click to check out nearby availability on the Exchange.

Ah, Puerto Vallarta, my favorite city on this Earth!

And I’m not alone. Puerto Vallarta was among Conde Nast Traveler 2017 Reader’s Choice Award picks for one of the “Best Cities in the World” as well as one of the “Top Small Cities Outside the U.S.”.

After all, how can a city that boasts being the film location of Schwarzenegger’s “Predator” as well as legendary Director John Huston’s “Night of the Iguana” not be a really special place?

So, after years of begging my two birthday compadres, Tina and Fiesta, to move our annual celebration (our birthdays are August 14th, 15th and 16th) out of the U.S. to Mexico, I finally won out and we planned a week long birthday celebration and reunion.

Ten long-time friends hopped on planes in Florida, Virginia, Colorado and Arizona and headed down to Puerto Vallarta for a birthday party for the ages. My final argument to the group was compelling and three-fold:

Reason #1: I had scored a beautiful 11,000 square-foot penthouse through ThirdHome for our birthday week located in the hills above the “Romantic Zone” of Puerto Vallarta.

Reason #2: Casa En Las Nubes (House in the Clouds) features a panoramic view of the City and Banderas Bay as well as a view of the Sierra Madre Mountains and, dare I mention, a private Chef named Santos and an exquisite bartender named Maurecio.

Reason #3: If your parents were savvy enough to name you “Fiesta” shouldn’t you, and your husband, spend important moments south of the border?

Now, there are many who believe that the only time to travel to Mexico is the winter season when snow, ice and freezing rain are the norm in much of the United States. I, however, have learned over the years that summer in Vallarta is a fantastic time to visit for the following reasons:

- Since it rains in the afternoons, the surrounding mountains and jungle are a dazzling emerald green. There is nothing quite as dramatic and photo-worthy as watching the clouds roll in over the Bay leading to the daily afternoon thunderstorm.

- Less Gringos (Americans) and cruise ships visit in the summer months and the locals are more relaxed and have time to talk and interact with curious tourists.

- Because of a constant breeze coming in from Banderas Bay summer is actually less humid and sultry than my home in Virginia. The Bay is very calm and swimmable.
So how do 10 old friends suddenly reunited in the same house for a week spend their waking vacation hours?

For starters, you reminisce, relax and rejuvenate. Our best moments were sitting together talking for hours in one of the home’s huge outside living areas looking down into the city as the sun sets and the Puerto Vallarta landscape moved from daytime to dazzling nighttime scenery.

Casa En Las Nubes was ideally situated for our nightly bonding. I have visited nearly every nook of Puerto Vallarta and nothing compares to the views we enjoyed each day. Throw in the amazing food and beverages and we really had no need to venture out, but venture out we did.

So many highlights over the 7 days but here are my personal favorites:

Highlight #1: Our water taxi and snorkeling ride to the Yelapa fishing village. Yelapa is a small Mexican town lost in time. On the towns website they brag: “A palapa in Yelapa is better than a condo in Redondo”. We sampled the world’s best Michelada (beer, clamato, shrimp, jicama, peanuts and more), we hiked to, and swam below the Yelapa waterfall, we sampled raicilla, a locally produced fermented mash (moonshine) and we took pictures with the biggest iguana I’ve ever seen.

Highlight #2: We spent a day roaming Puerto Vallarta’s Malecon (downtown boardwalk) admiring the numerous one-of-a-kind statues and sculptures while talking to locals, sampling tequila and indulging in local seafood. The huge local Mercado (market) met all our souvenir and shopping needs for the week.

Highlight #3: We ubered into the jungle to visit El Eden an eco-tourism natural park, site of the Predator movie set. Although we were all too chicken (or old) to participate, we watched the zipliners careen past us while we enjoyed a seafood lunch, listened to mariachi music and swam in the swimming hole beneath the Eden waterfall.

Highlight #4: The surprise afternoon visit of the mariachi band to our condo to usher in our birthday celebration. Thank you Dale and Art!

“Priceless” is the only word that describes a week like the one we just enjoyed. I’ve found the real joy of ThirdHome membership to be the opportunity to travel in a first-class manner to outstanding places while enjoying the company of my closest family members and friends. Gotta go, time to plan my next escapade.

Are you the kind of traveler smitten by the small wonders of each destination? If you are, then you likely enjoy the uniqueness and mystery of each destination’s sunsets. What better place to catch these daily wonders than in “The Sunshine State” itself? Here are The Top 10 Best Sunsets in Florida.

The Best Sunsets in Florida can often be found near ThirdHome properties. Have you witnessed one of these amazing views?

10. Bradenton
Where does the sun set? In the West, of course! Most of Florida’s best sunsets can be found on the state’s western coast and panhandle, facing the Gulf of Mexico. Bradenton Beach is no exception. Located on Anna Maria Island, just south of St. Petersburg, Bradenton Beach is surrounded on all sides by gorgeous blue waters. Bradenton rarely gets too crowded and the beach is very clean. The island’s small size also makes Bradenton very walkable. So take a stroll down Bradenton Beach to watch the sunset in a haze of purple and orange, it’s a sight you won’t forget.

9. Clearwater Beach
Further north along the West Coast, you’ll find another stellar spot for sunset viewing at Clearwater Beach. Make your way to Pier 60’s sunset festivities which include; live music, artisans, street performers and many other family-friendly activities from 6:00 pm-9:00 pm. There’s also a large number of restaurants and bars along the shore with rooftop decks facing West, as well as a number of sunset cruises offered. If finding your zen is important, maybe head to Indian Rocks Beach for a sunset yoga session. The sheer number of sunset based activities in Clearwater makes it an obvious choice for Florida’s best sunsets.

8. Destin
Celebrity chef, Emeril Lagasse once commented, “Destin’s vanilla sky will take your breath away but the view at twilight is just the beginning. With sugar white sand (and) emerald green water, walking through Destin is like strolling down an exotic beach.” And other’s visiting Destin share the sentiment. Since most of Destin’s coast faces South, you’ll experience the sunset at an angle. Regardless the sunset paints an unforgettable image. Head down Destin’s Harbor Boardwalk or to the dunes at Henderson Park for a great vantage point.

7. Fort Walton Beach
Another panhandle beauty, Fort Walton Beach is brimming with fantastic sunset views. Just hop onto Okaloosa Island Pier, for a small fee, to join in a beautiful sunset ritual. Visitors and locals gather at Okaloosa Island Pier to watch dolphins and manatees swim while the sun swells on the horizon. The pier also features deep sea fishing, while the surrounding area features a number of restaurants and watering holes. Share your next sunset with the dolphins and manatees down at Fort Walton Beach!

6. Islamorada
The west coast has some stellar sunsets, but one of Florida’s most remarkable sunsets can be found in the Florida Keys. Head down to Islamorada and catch an evening champagne cruise or a kayak tour to witness this sunset. Islamorada also has a number of beachfront cafes and restaurants with pristine views of the horizon. Just make sure you’re on the Gulf facing side of the island! You’ll miss your sunset on the ocean facing side.

5. Jupiter
You wouldn’t expect Florida’s eastern coast to have a must-see sunset, but you can find one in Jupiter thanks to the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse. This towering red icon sits on an inlet just off the coast. If you go across the Loxahatchee River to Square Grouper Tiki Bar or U Tiki Beach, you’ll have a western facing view of the lighthouse for the sunset. Or you can take a lighthouse sunset tour (moonrise tours are also offered) for an up-close sunset experience. If you ever find yourself in Jupiter, Florida, be sure to stop by Jupiter Inlet for a colorful evening.

4. Miramar Beach
If you’re in the Destin area and the Harbor Boardwalk isn’t open or is just too crowded, head down to Miramar Beach for an equally romantic view. High-end designer shops and delightful restaurants skirt the beach, giving you plenty to do after watching the sun illuminate the turquoise shore. Again, the southward view offered by Miramar Beach won’t give you a direct sunset, but you’ll see it at a southwestern angle. Despite the angle, it’ll still stop you in your tracks.

3. Naples Pier
Naples, Florida, looks directly west, out into the Gulf of Mexico. Naples Pier is a 1,000-foot-long pier that’s perfect for sunset gazing. Although it was recently damaged by Hurricane Irma, it should be repaired by the summer season. You can check out a time-lapse of Naples Pier’s sunset by clicking here. You’ll see why locals and visitors love a Naples sunset.

2. Pompano Beach
Just north of Fort Lauderdale is the City of Pompano Beach. The city has a beautiful 3-mile stretch of golden beaches. Although this destination puts you on the east coast, the sky still lights up in a remarkable way. So if you happen to be on the east coast and still want a satisfying sunset, make your way towards Pompano Beach.

1. Santa Rosa Beach
This top selection isn’t an immediately obvious choice for sunsets. Santa Rosa Beach is on an interior inlet facing Choctawhatchee Bay past Miramar Beach. But the peninsula it sits on runs West, giving you a prime view of the sun setting on the water. With splendid beachfront and grassy dunes spread out across Santa Rosa Beach, nothing is quite as pleasant as watching the sun’s glow contrast against the blue water, white sand and green grass. And since Santa Rosa Beach is mostly comprised of rental properties, you won’t find many large crowds out here.
Let’s be honest, Florida is full of gorgeous beaches with amazing sunset views. Find your next sunset with a Florida ThirdHome stay: Click here to see all available properties in Florida.
