Description

Casa Barranca

Casa Barranca is a beautiful estate nestled against the Los Padres National Forest and overlooking the Ojai Valley. The house and grounds create a perfect get away for a family vacation or retreat with friends due to the extreme beauty surrounding.

On the property is a 1400 square foot yoga studio, pool, access to a public hiking trail, winery and many places to gather. The local town of Ojai is fun to visit, lots of little shops and boutiques, farm to table restaurants, the movie theatre shows one movie per week and the Sunday Farmers Market is lovely. Not far is the ocean which is a 20 minute drive or Santa Barbara is fun for a day visit. If you are looking for a place to retreat in nature you have found it.

A little bit about the history of the home:
Charles and Henry Greene, the preeminent architects of the Arts and Crafts Movement, designed the Pratt House for Charles and Mary Pratt in 1909. The house, a perfect fusion of Japanese aesthetic and American practicality, sits on a ridge-line overlooking the valley of idyllic Ojai, California. The Greene and Greene architectural plans refer to the project as "The Pratt House" however the Pratts named their home and estate "Casa Barranca” referring to the seasonal river bed running through the property.

Noted as one of the Greenes' five "ultimate bungalows," the Pratt House embraces the Arts and Crafts ideal by creating an open and elegant living space without resorting to excessive decorative detail. Comprised of two wings unified by a central living room/entrance way, the house boasts five large bedrooms, six fireplaces, four bathrooms, three sleeping porches, an eat-in kitchen, a formal dining room, and front, rear and upper patios.

Architectural Digest notes that in the grace of the Pratt House "...the sun translates the Greenes' structural poetry into ever-shifting patterns of light against polished wood. At night... the silhouette of live oaks is framed against the Milky way. A closer approximation to Shangri-La is hard to imagine."

Today, in keeping with the humble and pure ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement, the Pratt House and it's estate are powered by solar electricity, draw their water from artesian springs and are surrounded by an organic vineyard and gardens which are farmed on sustainable, permaculture principles.

Our home is located on 54 beautiful acres. Enjoy!

Incredible Architecture

Dear Giovanna, We enjoyed our stay at Casa Baranca and departed yesterday. Per your suggestion, we waited to raise concerns about the quality/key ranking of the property till now. We are attaching some photos of the master bath, the kitchen and dining room per your request. Let me start by saying there were many positives that exceeded expectations. The owner and the property manager Ray met us on arrival and gave us a nice orientation. Very helpful. The home is an architectural masterpiece well preserved and maintained in the same style as it was conceived in 1909. The gardens were beautiful, pool and grounds immaculate. The yoga studio was a lovely building and the walking trails were extensive and wonderful. The owners have done a great job preserving this historic property. However, the negatives when one expects a “luxury" stay were: There was no TV. Music was only with a small single music box that only accommodated an old iPhone. The kitchen stove had a bad gas leak and the grill did not work. While the dishwasher was present, we were told it did not work and due to the large number of people the place accommodates, many dishes and most glasses used by prior guests were put away dirty. The home is a full time rental home and not used to live in by the owners. The bedding was old and lumpy, pillows, sheets and towels were of inferior quality and mismatched. There are 22 individual beds on the property as it is primarily a yoga retreat and while the set up is great for a large number of individuals coming to meditate and do yoga, it is not set up well for a family gathering such as ours. Very camp like in its furnishings and appointments. The bathrooms were vintage. Some had add on shower stalls with curtains. The master bath shower was attached by wire to the metal shower rod and the curtain was fixed so that to adjust the water flow one had to get out of the tub. Pattie and I were there with our three married grown children. Too many single beds in each of the five bedrooms and only one king bed. The bedrooms were dorm like. The dining room only had four chairs, five if one used the kitchen chairs. The outside dining could seat about 30 and it was lovely. While certainly a very expensive property, it did not match expectations for a luxury 10 key stay, due to deferred maintenance, sleeping accommodations, and overall comforts. It would be a great place for a yoga retreat or camp like meeting. When I compare it to our home on 3rd home at 2 keys, this is at best a 4 key property. We used 10 keys and $795 for this stay. It was worth about 4/5 keys in our mind. Does 3rd home have a process for customer reviews or staff reviews and have other 3rd home members used this property and made a prior report? The only online review was on VRBO and from 2012. Had we known the condition of the appointments to this home, we would not have booked it. Thanks, Carl Carl F.
