Rustic Farmhouse in Umbria

Description

Above the tiny hamlet of San Giovanni del Pantano lies Gudiolo di Sopra.

Set amongst olive trees and lavenders the carefully restored XV Century tower and house, with a saltwater swimming pool, enjoys stunning views of distant fields and valleys.

The house is spacious and full of light. In the sitting room, cool breezes pass through the open doors that lead to the garden and tower. The kitchen is fully equipped with an adjoining dining room (for 12). Lunch and dinners are usually served outside (one table seats 6, the other 12). A variety of outdoor seating areas surround the house offering privacy and silence.

A loggia by the tower offers a relaxing space to watch the sunset. A lounge area outside the dining room offers the comfort of a living room while enjoying the breathtaking views. An organic vegetable garden provides seasonable salads and vegetables and the estate also produces its own biological olive oil. The only little shop in the village offers typical gourmet products from local farmers.

Just 1.5 kilometers away, Antognolla Castle overlooks the 18-hole championship golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and is well worth a visit.

Please note that Gudiolo dates back to the XV century, which means that some ceilings are low and we have steps and stairs. Not suited for toddlers and people with mobility problems.
The swimming pool is not gated. Children need constant supervision.

A fee of € 300 is applied for the cleaning before and after, which includes change of bedlinen & towels. A further fee of € 150 per week to cover utilities (including wood for the fireplaces). Please note that central (gas) heating, which is very expensive in Italy, is not included in the utilities.

Gudiolo---Especially Wonderful

Have you ever wondered where your God goes to rest and recuperate from the stressful work of being in charge of everything? I may have found this place of God's renewal.... in Gudiolo in the rolling hills of Umbria near the small hamlet of San Giovanni del Pantano. This is a place where even time has halted its march of progress and peace and tranquility abound. There is no rush here. Everything goes slowly and quietly to the beat of your own heart. There is no TV here; no telephone; no cars rushing by. Even the hamlet of San Giovanni del Pantano, with its 87, residents is over a mile away. Three magnificent Maremanni Sheep dogs spend their time quietly watching over the hillside of olive trees and grapevines insuring that you get the experience you have sought, just as they have provided centuries of safety for the sheep for which they have been breed. Fully equipped with all necessities for a full and rewarding vacation, you will have auto access to the medieval villages of Assisi, Perugia, Corciano. Umbertide and to Lake Trasimeno. You will have the opportunity to study medieval art by many of the :"old masters". If you are a hiker, you can hike to an Etruscan tomb on a nearby hillside. And so much more. You might think God created this place just for himself. But no. With the help of Madeleine and her family, you too, can experience it... as I did. John Rynes in Breckenridge, Colorado honeyhut@aol.com ****************************************************************** Our week at Gudiolo could not have been better! The peaceful beauty of the house and grounds made it an ideal spot to return to after a hard day of being a tourist. I enjoyed the opportunity to cook a few meals in the well-equipped kitchen and dine al fresco with a view of the Umbrian hills. Extremely comfortable beds, an endless selection of music CD's, and friendly dogs who welcomed us each day... Heaven! Mary Lou in Evanston, Illinois mloujohns@aol.com ”

An experience like no other!

Wow, what a fantastic week in Umbria. To say that Gudiolo was intriguing & unique would be a gross understatement. Picture yourself in a farmhouse tastefully restored to preserve it's hundreds of years old pedigree while providing many of the creature comforts we all demand on vacations. Commanding panoramic views of rolling countrysides and patchwork farmland dominate the horizon. Truly magical. Let's back up a bit though to give you a thorough review of the property, it's host and the whole Umbrian experience. We arrived late afternoon in Rome and rented a car. Be aware that renting a car in Europe is a lot different than in N.A. No walk out & hop in. More like take a number at the counter and wait, wait & wait some more. There are many reviews covering the rental experience in Rome, most bad. However, to be fair, our counter wait was only a 1/2 hour and the counter staff were really nice. They were out of the car category we reserved but did provide a decent replacement with navigation. I highly recommend you get nav as getting around the many alleys, roadways & laneways in Italy demand a savant's touch. As a result we weren't able to reach Gudiolo until after 9 o'clock. But, no worries, our host Madeleine had left the door open & lights on so it was a simple matter of moving in, picking our bedrooms, having a glass of wine & crashing for the night. A little about our hosts... There are 2 houses on their property, both fantastic transformations of rustic farmhouses. Though Madeleine does travel, she lives in one of the homes with her dogs; Atlas, Alma & Nero. Madeleine could not be more helpful; she basically reviewed what we had planned to explore in Umbria, tweaked the itinerary to maximize the experience and provided lots of history. She called to confirm reservations, gave directions etc. - she was like our own knowledgable tour guide always quick with an anecdote. One of the highlights of our vacation was a special luncheon at friends of hers that have a fantastic retreat close to Gubbio. We invited Madeleine, her significant other Mark & brother Rolando and they graciously accepted. It was a memorable day that included a spectacular drive there, a personal tour from the owners, a luncheon to remember with many stories about the history of the area & build of that property. Back to Gudiolo - Madeleine's dogs, they are fantastic. They took us on hikes through the countryside, always nudging us along on the right trail. They came by the house often for some belly rubs, a drink of water. They were our honored companions throughout the week - wish I had three dogs just like them. The house itself is like no other. For those of you expecting the Ritz with sleek, modern furnishings and fixtures, it's not. That would ruin the character of the property. It's a 3 storey HOME, with spacious bedrooms and ensuites. The only thing I will warn you on is the height of the ceiling on the third floor. I'm 6' 4" and I banged my head 3 times the first night. And the stairs are a bit tight moving up and down. The kitchen is well appointed and Madeleine has generously stocked everything you can think of that is not perishable. All she asks is for you to replace what you use. A nice size kitchen though it can be a bit crowded with multiple cooks, a sizable dining room sitting 10-12 comfortably and a large living room/great room overlooking the countryside comprise the main floor. All the bedrooms are on the 2nd & 3rd floors so being able to navigate up at least one set of wooden stairs is a must. As I said before, this is Madeleine's home. There a lot of mementoes, pictures, books etc so the feeling was that we were visiting friends, not living in a hotel. Great pool, deck & chaise lounges, very comfortable. Normally the pool is closed at this time of year but Madeleine will keep open for a fee. Still, it was a bit chilly. Madeleine invited us to use the herb garden for cooking which we did frequently. There are olive & fig trees all over the place. It's truly a one of a kind property. You'll love it! ”
