Description

La Casa de La Esquela

Welcome to your own private desert resort. This 5-bedroom family home overlooking the Rio Grande Valley, Jemez Mountains, and the Black Mesa includes an outdoor hot tub, indoor sauna, private flagstone patio, vine-covered pergola, a rock goldfish pond, custom-made iron gates, and breathtaking views from nearly every window.

Designed by the Chicago architect William Keck in 1942, the
passive-solar building originally was the Los Alamos schoolhouse (where the children of the Manhattan Project studied) before being moved to this spur of land above the Rio Grande.

The modern kitchen includes a double oven and a copper-hooded restaurant-style stove, while the dining room seats 12 and has a massive stone gas fireplace. Navajo rugs, art pieces, and paintings decorate the house, which includes a sunny living room (also with a gas fireplace) and a private study, while the bedrooms and four full bathrooms are each furnished in a distinct style. A sun room leads out to the patio, hot tub and views. Both wings have their own master bedroom with private bath, as well as two washers and dryers.

We can be flexible on the check in/out days. Please let us know your preference and if we have availability we will certainly accommodate your request.

The home is cooled by a traditional New Mexican swamp cooler which brings moisture into the dry air. All bedrooms, kitchen and game area have ceiling fans. The TV has Netflix, Amazon Prime movies and a few news channels, there is no cable.

A short stroll through the cottonwoods takes you to the Rio Grande; the famous El Santuario de Chimayo is 15 minutes away, Sante Fe is a beautiful 25-minute drive, Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs is 30 minutes away, and Taos lies 45 minutes to the north as does Georgia O'Keefe's Ghost Ranch. Three ski areas are in the vicinity as well. Ski Santa Fe is 1 hour, Ski Taos is 1.5 hours, Ski Pajarito is 1 hour. But you may want to stay home and enjoy the views and walk the short half mile to the river. The path along the river is approximately 3 miles round trip.

Best View from back yard!!

We stayed here in Sept 2017. There were 7 of us and we totally enjoyed ourselves. We would definitely stay here if we went back to New Mexico. First of all, do not be discouraged after you turn off of 399, once you get inside the gate, it is so peaceful. The house was very comfortable & clean & well stocked with all the basic needs - shampoo, soap, toilet paper...The kitchen had everything you needed & very well stocked with spices, foil,....which was so nice. There was enough seating areas where you could sneak away if you needed some quite time. The indoor sauna was wonderful to use after a day of hiking. The location of the house was very convenient for us being that it was in between Sante Fe & Taos. Second, the owner was TOTALLY accommodating & very quick to respond to any & all requests & questions. The third and last, the VIEW from the back yard was amazing. It was our favorite part of the house & trip. ”

Relaxing place to be.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at La Casa de la Esquela. The location of this property affords stunning views, as well as a peaceful and quiet environment to relax, read, and enjoy nature (humming birds galore, hawks/eagles/owls, bunnies, coyotes, and so forth). It was easy to drive to unique places of interest nearby, like the Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio in Abiquiú, and Ghost Ranch a little further on. Taos is just over an hour drive north, and a visit to see Taos Pueblo is highly recommended. Also, cultural Santa Fe is only a half-hour drive (and I need to point out that every commute in New Mexico is an amazing experience, with varied and spectacular views; hard to keep one's eyes on the road!). Host offered great suggestions for where to dine and shop around in the region, and they nicely dropped-off some of their superb Swiss chard, kale, heirloom tomatoes and other garden goodies they grow, for me to enjoy during my stay. Arguably, the best wine shop in NM is about fifteen-minutes drive from the property (called Kokoman, and I recommend stocking-up there; much better selection than Trader Joe's). All in all, a most pleasant place to have called home for a week. Thank you for sharing with me!”

Our stay was excellent; the location was somewhat distant from Santa Fe but we figured it out and the house was worth the drive”

La Casa de La Escuela a Great Family Retreat

New Mexico is the Land of Enchantment and La Casa de La Escuela is placed in the center of that enchantment. This is the old school house from the Manhatten Project days at Los Alamos. It has been lovingly restored, maintained, and updated to modern standards. Decorated with charm and style, each room is a delight to the eye and the senses. The lovely grounds call you to the magical vistas of the openness that is quintessential New Mexico. Located between Santa Fe and Taos, close to ski areas, Bandelier National Monument and Los Alamos, day trips for exploration and shopping, education and edification. Its all close at hand and there for your delight. We look forward to returning.”
