Mountaintop Nature Preserve, San Juan Islands National Monument
San Juan Islands' Orcas Cliffside Retreat
Welcome to Elysian Ledge, America's highest island home. Adjoining the incredible 5000 acre Moran State Park, the four small cottages that comprise this mountainside compound provide direct access to the wonders of this most beautiful of the San Juan archipelago of islands in Salish Sea, equidistant from Seattle, Vancouver and Victoria.
Upon your arrival, choose to be as active or sedentary as you wish. Awaken to the sight of eagles circling Mount Constitution. Enjoy the indoor cedar sauna or outdoor hot tub with a view of Vancouver Island. Hike or drive to nearby lakes, waterfalls and natural springs. There are a myriad of private forest trails on the property leading to hidden reading nooks, meditation areas, sculpture and forest artwork. The main cottage has Dish Network cable service and the lower lodge features an 80" high definition television to stream your latest Netflix entertainment.
Known as the "island of artisans", Orcas features unique boutiques and galleries in the villages of Eastsound and Olga, where you can pick up a treasured memento of your visit. Or explore the island by renting a mountain bike, moped, or kayak and discover the dozens of beautiful inlets, bike trails and byways. Rosario Resort offers spa services, beautiful waterfront grounds, and daily free tours of the historic mansion and weekly concerts. Doe Bay Cafe Resort & Hot Springs is famous for their fresh food offerings, natural hot springs, and annual music festival. Take a whale watching excursion, or rent a boat (in Westsound or Deer Harbor marinas), and explore the beautiful surrounding islands and marine sanctuary.
A rich farming tradition continues to this day on Orcas, with local farms supplying both locals and visitors with a wide array of organic produce, meat, fish and shellfish. The very best restaurants on the island feature these foods prominently on their menu, continuing the chain from farmer to consumer with a delicious twist. See some of this for yourself as you visit the Saturday Farmer's Market on the Village Green or enjoy a farm to table meal on Sunday. You may also choose to take tours of the many organic farms on the island.
Entering Moran State Park, be sure to stop by Cascade Lake for an ice cream cone and rent a paddle boat. Then drive up to the precipice of 2400 foot Mount Constitution, visiting Cavern, Hidden and Cascade waterfalls that flow out of beautiful Mountain Lake. The scenic park roadway ends at the stone observation tower built in 1936 by the Cicil Conservation Corps which affords 365 degree views of the U.S. and Canadian mountains, waterways and islands.
Getting to the island is half the fun. A leisurely ride on a Washington State Ferry gives you a taste of the America's most beautiful islands, reached from the Anacortes Ferry Terminal, 85 miles north of Seattle. Reservations must be made in advance via the ferry system website: https://secureapps.wsdot.wa.gov/Ferries/Reservations/Vehicle/default.aspx
To drive to the Anacortes ferry terminal from Seattle:
Take I-5 North. Take Exit 230 to Burlington/Anacortes. Follow Highway 20 west to the port city of Anacortes, Washington.
The highway will end as it merges into a traffic circle entering the city. Head to the right (west) onto Commercial Avenue and follow it into downtown Anacortes. Take a left at 12th St., where signs point you to the San Juan Islands ferry, and follow for about 4 miles to the terminal. Allow a comfortable 2 hours to enjoy the drive and the scenery from Seattle or Vancouver B.C. to the Anacortes ferry.
Notes: Although the village is only 20 minutes from the home, access is best described as "beach to mountaintop" driving, with the bulk of the time spent on a paved mountain road. The final couple of miles are on a flat and then steep gravel road and driveway, (so an "all wheel drive" or "4-wheel drive" car or SUV is highly recommended).
This unique property is not appropriate for children under 10 years old or pets. Also, given the steep terrain, flagstone sidewalk paths and steps, the home is not suitable for older guests or others with mobility considerations. With that in mind, we look forward to welcoming you to our island nature paradise, (and we assure you, getting here is half the fun!)

A wonderful week relaxing on Orcas Island. The views are incredible! The host is a pleasure to work with and makes you feel welcome. Mike cares about your visit and works closely with his guests I would definitely go again. Barry Feinberg”
The owner is charming, gracious, informative, and available by cell phone, email, and text. The views are spectacular, and the surrounding acreage is filled with hiking trails adorned by whimsical statues and seating areas. Excellent hiking into Moran State Park is accessible directly from the property, but only for the experienced hiker. The owner has many suggestions for things to do, restaurants and resources on the island. That being said...... we wish we would have known the following before booking: The road from Eastsound is very steep, 15 minutes with the last few miles being a gravel road. A 4 wheel drive vehicle is required. The "house" is comprised of four separate cottages totaling 2000 square feet. The "main house" is adequate but very small with a tiny kitchen. The closets and floor in the bedroom have a lot of the owners clothes and other clutter. the upper cottage has a bedroom, a very small bathroom, and a small sitting area but clutter prohibited using this area. The lower cottage has a couch and 80 inch TV that can only be used for DVDs as it is not hooked up to cable. The fourth structure is a storeroom that is not living space. The buildings can be characterized as rustic. ”
We had the pleasure of returning to Orcas Island for a second trip and we are so glad we did! As always, Mike was such an accommodating and generous host. The cabins were in pristine condition and provide the perfect amount of space and seclusion. The view was even better than we remembered. No photograph does it justice. It’s an absolute ideal location if you feel the need to “get away from it all” – as there is no one in your view from this property, except the occasional woodpecker or deer. This island is incredibly special! You never know what can happen while you’re here. During our stay we had dinner in the bay and a group of transient whales came into the shallow water and gave us a little show. The locals informed us that has never happened before and it felt special to be able to witness it. There was plenty on the island to keep us busy so we didn’t feel the need to venture off into other parts of Washington. Make sure to check out Buck Bay Shellfish Farm where you pick and shuck your own local clams and oysters, shopping in Eastsound, Clever Cow Creamery (the lavender ice cream is to die for), horseback riding through Moran State Park, Orcas Moon Alpaca Farm, the Saturday morning farmers market, all the delicious local restaurants, and more! We were fortunate enough to stay over Fourth of July week and the town put on a spectacular fireworks show in the bay that we were able to take in from an aerial perspective. It was phenomenal! This all being said, none of these activities compare to when you have the good fortune of watching the sky fade through every color in the rainbow as you watch the most magnificent, breathtaking sunset over the San Juans from your patio. If you’re fortunate enough to have the opportunity to stay at this property, you don’t want to pass it up. We highly recommend this location and hope to make it back in the near future. Thank you again, Mike!”
Our stay at Eastsound was a wonderful experience. The view is outstanding high atop Buck Mountain. The mountain road is lined with daisies and foxglove and many deer. (Even a few Bambi's) The patio is a wonderful place to watch hawks fly, boats sail and small planes land at the Orcas airport. The sunset are very special also. The town of Eastsound is a charming place with many restaurant choices with local healthy produce and farm to table menu selections. Hiking, whale watching and kayaking were fun adventures. I highly recommend this experience especially since the owner was so accommodating.”
The week couldn't have been any better if I wanted it to. The home was great even better than expectations, Mike was beyond wonderful host. He went above and beyond with leaving directions and things to do while on the island which was very helpful. I would recommend this house to anyone and everyone. The views are unbelievable and can't even put into words how breathtaking they really are, you can see Canada and the United States at the same time. The town was so great that we now want to retire there.”
We thoroughly enjoyed staying on Orcas Island at this magical get away. We brought our older children with us who stayed in the separate cabin and loved it. The owners dining recommendations exceeded our expectations. We hope to return for a couples retreat very soon. ”
Phenomenal peaceful resbit!
My husband and I were looking for a secluded getaway. We found a pristine canvas of some of God's most beautiful handiwork. The setting was surreal, high above the clouds and the maddening crowds. The setting was gorgeous and we soaked in a view of the forest, the islands, and delightful sculpture artfully mixed in the landscape. The accommodations were wonderful and our host was so welcoming. Art and sculpture abound and it made it a special retreat. Town was a delightful trip down the mountain and was just close enough to be handy and just far enough give us space and peace. Great chefs are foumd in hidden places and fun art shops abound. Our favorite was Monkey's Puzzle which has an array of antique and hand made jewelry and clothing from Tibet, China and other wonderful places. You will find the shop owner, Sallie, a delight and a wealth of info about the island. The beautiful Moran State Park provided great hiking and biking. Finally, make sure to spend an evening at the Orcas Hotel by the ferry...Martin Lund retired from LA and entertains with his clarinet, flute and piano in a creative and elegant way amidst a fun historical setting. Orcas Island is one of the most delightful places we have visited. We would recommend highly to anyone who truly wants to be refreshed.”
Spectacular views from a wonderful Summer house !
We really enjoyed our stay here. Orcas Island is the best of the San Juan Islands - a artsy flavor in downtown Eastsound with fantastic restaurants. The house itself has the best view on the island. It is ideal for adult couples as each bedroom is located in a separate building. The house is about 12 minutes from town and located in a beautiful setting. I would recommend a four wheel drive vehicle as our front wheel drive car wasn't so cooperative on the last mile of the gravel roads. Bring your cameras !”
The view from this very special place is jaw dropping! We had the most incredible time. Mike, the owner, has created a retreat that provides great beauty and a bit of whimsy. If you are into nature's best, I highly recommend this special spot. ”
Lovely Getway, Stunning View, Magical Place
The owner’s of this property have created a magical place. The grounds are filled with surprises at every turn and the cabins are beautifully decorated – not to mention the view, oh the view!! The hot tub has perhaps one of the best views of any! The island itself was a wonderful get away – we saw orcas, swam, hiked, explored, collected treasures. It was a great family adventure. We have just one caveat – we convinced the owner’s that our 4 and 6 year olds could naviagate the rocky terrain and handle the main cabin’s dangerous stairs and the kids did actually do just fine. However, I definitely see the wisdom of restricting this to kids 10 years and older. The cabins are not kid proof, so we had to be extra vigilant watching them – which puts one out of relaxing vacation mode. Also, if our kids were a little older and able to stay in one of the other cabins, that would have been ideal. Despite this personal issue, the owner’s were extremely responsive, very kind and extremely helpful. This place is wonderful and I give it a very very high recommendation!!”
We had such a wonderful time on Orcas. The home was perfect for our island getaway. The views were spectacular and the property was enchanting. We particularly enjoyed the hikes on the property which happened to be adjacent to Moran State Park. The owner was delightful and so helpful with suggestions of things to do on the island and surrounding islands. It was a great trip!”
