Description

Mountaintop Nature Preserve, San Juan Islands National Monument

Welcome to Elysian Ledge, America's highest island home. Adjoining beautiful 5000 acre Moran State Park, the three small cottages that comprise this mountainside compound provide direct access to the wonders of the most beautiful of the San Juan archipelago of islands, equidistant from Seattle, Vancouver, and Victoria.

Upon your arrival, choose to be as active or sedentary as you wish. Awaken to the sight of eagles circling Mount Constitution, and start your day with a steam in the cedar sauna or soak in the outdoor hot tub with a view of the Salish Sea. Hike/drive to nearby lakes, waterfalls and natural springs, or venture to Buck Bay Shellfish for fresh oysters. On the property there are over twenty hand-hewn pathways leading to hidden reading nooks, meditation areas, sculpture, and forest artwork. The main cottage offers a small kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. There is Wif-Fi and DishTV service + the lower lodge features 80-inch high definition television to stream your latest Netflix entertainment. The property features a king, queen and queen sofa bed.

Known as the "island of artisans”, Orcas features unique boutiques and galleries in the villages of Eastsound and Olga. Explore the island by mountain bike, moped, or kayak and discover the dozens of beautiful inlets, bike trails, and byways. Rosario Resort offers spa services, beautiful waterfront grounds, and daily free tours of the historic mansion and weekly concerts. Doe Bay Cafe Resort and Hot Springs is famous for their fresh food offerings, natural hot springs, and annual music festival. Take a whale watching excursion or rent a boat for a day to explore the beautiful surrounding islands and marine sanctuary.

A rich farming tradition continues to this day on Orcas, with local farms supplying both locals and visitors with a wide array of organic produce, meat, fish, and shellfish. The very best restaurants on the island feature these foods prominently on their menu, continuing the chain from farmer to consumer with a delicious twist. See some of this for yourself as you visit the Saturday Farmer's Market on the Village Green or enjoy a farm to table meal on Sunday. You may also choose to take tours of the many organic farms on the island.

Entering Moran State Park, be sure to stop by Cascade Lake for an ice cream cone and rent a paddle boat. Then drive up to the precipice of 2400-foot Mount Constitution, visiting Cavern, Hidden and Cascade waterfalls that flow out of beautiful Mountain Lake. The scenic park roadway ends at the stone observation tower built in 1936 by the Civil Conservation Corps which affords 365-degree views of the U.S. and Canadian mountains, waterways and islands.

Getting to the island is half the fun! A leisurely ride on a Washington State Ferry gives you a taste of America's most beautiful islands, reached from the Anacortes Ferry Terminal, 85 miles north of Seattle. Reservations must be made in advance via the ferry system website: https://secureapps.wsdot.wa.gov/Ferries/Reservations/Vehicle/default.aspx

To drive to the Anacortes ferry terminal from Seattle:
Take I-5 North. Take Exit 230 to Burlington/Anacortes. Follow Highway 20 west to the port city of Anacortes, Washington. The highway will end as it merges into a traffic circle entering the city. Head to the right (west) onto Commercial Avenue and follow it into downtown Anacortes. Take a left at 12th Street, where signs point you to the San Juan Islands Ferry, and follow for about four miles to the terminal. Allow a comfortable two hours to enjoy the drive and the scenery from Seattle or Vancouver B.C. to the Anacortes Ferry.

Notes:
This unique property is on the side of a mountain ledge and is comprised of three rustic cottages. As such, it is not appropriate for children under ten years old nor pets. Also, given the steep terrain, flagstone sidewalk paths, and stepping stones, the cottages are not suitable for older guests with mobility limitations. Although the village of Eastsound is only 20 minutes from the home, access is best described as "beach to mountaintop" driving, with the bulk of the time spent on a paved mountain road. The final couple of miles are on a steep gravel road and driveway: ("all wheel drive" or "four-wheel drive" vehicle required).

Unique property with spectacular views

This is a truly unique property with expansive views of the San Juan Islands near the top of Orcas Island. Extensive grounds with whimsical accents. The cottages are small and comfortable but cozy and well-equipped. The host was most accommodating and helpful. There are many things to do on Orcas Island including hiking, kayaking, and whale watching. The quaint village of Eastsound is nearby. There are several excellent restaurants on the island. The road to the house is picturesque but steep and a good all wheel or 4 wheel drive vehicle is necessary. This is a great one of a kind property in a beautiful location.”

Jaw dropping

This was our second trip to this special spot. Still awesome! Nature's best with that touch of whimsey. Eastsound reminds you of a New England seaside village. Lovely! Mike provided more than enough information. We so enjoyed our week.”

Best Views of all time!

I’ve traveled quite extensively over the years and seldom do I have that feeling of “Oh My God”. This property was one of those moments Views off the charts. Very cool vibe and one of a kind home that is very special in so many ways. It’s not the Ritz but total relaxation and tons of fun. Great property for two couples and teen age kids. Highly recommend and the owner Michael is awesome to work with. ”
