Description

The Famous Malibu Wing House

Sleep under the wings of a 747! This home is THE world famous 747 Wing House. Nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains with unparalleled views from everywhere in the home. House is made of cement, steel, glass, and the 747 wings overhead.

Interiors are designed with gracious comfort and entertaining in mind. Lounge around the 60 foot long swimming pool; pick fresh herbs, veggies; pluck fruit/nuts from the 40 fruit/nut trees; play a little Bocce from regulation court; hike in surrounding valley/mountains (State Parkland);or just cozy up with a good book in one of the many hammocks strategically placed around this 55 acre estate.

A groundskeeper and housekeeper come with the package! My housekeeper takes good care to clean thoroughly each day as I do have 1, 11 year old cat in residence.

Interesting facts about The Famous Malibu Wing House:

Rehwald's "Wing House" is made almost entirely out of the recycled parts of a 747 Boeing plane. Aluminum airplane wings make up the roof and ceiling, and while they might be most striking, more than 4.7 million other parts were repurposed for the house. The home is also featured in BBC 2's "The World’s Most Extraordinary Homes".

Inspiration to use old plane parts came from the house's original design. Rehwald wanted to avoid the masculine angularity of common rooftops, so she asked her architect, David Hertz, to construct something lighter and more slender.

The house was built on a 55-acre property, 5 miles up from Pacific Coast Highway, at the western edge of Malibu, California, and was formerly owned and occupied by famous artist and Hollywood set designer Tony Duquette. Duquette's property was burned in the Green Meadow fire of 1993, which resulted in the complete destruction of over twenty-one of the structures that he and his wife had created from recycled objects and movie sets.

The main house comprises two separate buildings linked together on three levels and uses two wings and two horizontal stabilizers from a Boeing 747-100. The lower house is partially open air and has 18-foot-tall (5.5 m) ceilings topped with the left 747 wing. The upper structure creates the main house and uses the right wing as the main roof and two horizontal stabilizers as the roofs of the master bedroom and bathroom.

The finished main house incorporates the wings of the 747-100. Hertz also designed many outlying buildings that use the remaining portions of the 747 fuselage. An art studio building will use a 50 ft. long section of the upper fuselage as a roof, while the remaining front portion of the fuselage and upper first class cabin deck will be used as the roof of a guest house. The lower half of the fuselage, which forms the cargo hold, will form the roof of a barn. A meditation pavilion will be made from the entire front of the airplane, measuring 28 ft. in diameter and 45 ft. tall, in which the cockpit windows will form a skylight.

No children allowed under the age of 14 year old.

Spectacular

Our week in the Wing House is one we will never forget. "One-of-a-kind" is a term used too loosely to describe real estate; there is simply nothing like this place anywhere! While the dazzling and original architecture of the house itself is obviously the main draw, it cannot be overstated how spectacular the entire property, location and views are. This is a truly special spot and, as locals, we know the area very well. Located in the northern and most remote part of the Santa Monica Mountains, the Wing House boasts the most magnificent mountain view in the region (Sandstone Peak/Boney Ridge), and the dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows met by the 747 wings frame these views from nearly every room. Essentially, the wings provide a feeling of flying, particularly at sunrise/sunset. Climatic elements (i.e. sun and wind) have been sensitively considered throughout. The 55 acres of carefully tended gardens --including succulent plants, Asian pagodas, a creek and small waterfall, Bocce court and an orchard -- are idyllic. Given the hot weather during our stay we spent most of the time lounging in and around the gorgeous 60ft swimming pool - a true oasis on the property. It is absolutely silent both day and night accept for the occasional hooting of owls or howling of coyotes. Daily housekeeping was provided by the charming and discreet caretakers who live on the property. The Wing House is a sanctuary for guests who appreciate contemporary architecture and nature in a peaceful, remote setting. Anyone seeking a restorative aesthetic experience with luxurious amenities will not be disappointed.”

we spent Christmas at the wing house and it surpassed our expectations. Every time you turned around and looked a different direction there was something new to look at. there is no way to describe it or any pictures that can capture it. this is a must see to appreciate. ”

Breathtaking!

This is one very special home ... a site to behold, a engineering masterpiece, something only a few may get to be a part of ... but what a special week. The home is simple, yet elegant, solid as a fortress, energy that's amazing, and a true place to relax, unplug, and be amazed ... their is a local team that takes care of the details and anything you need ... and Malibu and all it's trappings is not too far away. I also would like to comment on the architecture, design, and the ART ... each day a new finding, a snake made out of bottle caps, a picture that when looked at again, is different that you thought ... splendid indeed was out time in "The Wing House", this one is really something special!”
