Experience 5 nights/6 days savoring every bite on this extraordinary tasting experience of the Puglia region, inspired by the slow food movement. This culinary journey introduces the local cooking traditions, tucked away villages and breathtaking architecture in this sublime iconic corner of Southern Italy. Taste artisan cheeses including locally farmed creamy burrata at Caseificio Famiglia Olanda; lunch amid 18th century Tenuta in a hilltop masseria; step inside the cellar of Castel di Salve to discover and sip wines crafted from Puglia’s indigenous grapes; and sample the fishermen’s catch in Gallipoli and fresh-from-the-ocean seafood in Polignano a Mare.

SLOW FOOD OF PUGLIA Itinerary in Brief:
DAY 1: BARI & JOURNEY TO MARTINA FRANCA
Arrival into Bari - meet and greet at airport by your local guide. Begin by walking in the footsteps of knights and noblemen at Castel del Monte – a UNESCO Heritage site with a remarkable octagonal shape to explore. After working up an appetite, stop at Famiglia Olanda Caseificio Artigianale for your first taste of Puglia food culture....smooth creamy burrata and silky mozzarella cheeses. After a traditional local lunch it’s on to Matera and another journey back through time. Here, a guided tour of the historic center takes you to the rock-carved Sassi – ancient cave dwellings and houses that have hugged the hillside for thousands of years. As dusk sets in, it’s time to relax into an authentic slow food welcome dinner. Just outside the Baroque city of Martina Franca, in the elegant surrounds of a country mansion, you will wrap up today’s delicious introduction to the region’s cuisine. (Lunch and Dinner included)
DAY 2: MARTINA FRANCA – ALBEROBELLO – MARTINA FRANCA
It’s not often that one has the chance to see a natural wonder first thing in the morning. But, following breakfast in Martina Franca, the journey today leads you below ground to the spellbinding Castellana Caves. Look up to see stalactites and down to find fossils that are hidden throughout these fairy-tale grottos. There are enchanting sights above ground too. In Alberobello, there’s the chance to marvel at the prehistoric cone-topped trulli dotted across the landscape. Stop to enjoy a local sociable hour with wine tasting in the scenic Locorotondo area. Part of the Itria Valley wine trail, it’s home to traditional whites that are mellow on the palate with just a hint of peach. After that, continue onward exploring the historic culture of Martina Franca or simply settle in to a local restaurant. From here on, the evening’s all yours to enjoy as you wish. DAY 3: MARTINA FRANCA – MASSERIA FERRI – LECCE
With its jumble of architectural buildings, pretty Ostuni wholeheartedly lives up to its nickname: the White Village - as it sparkles as if dusted in iced sugar. It is here you will begin a memorable excursion for the day. This pretty hamlet is huddled in quintessential Puglia countryside, so it’s only right that lunch today is in a rural masseria – a local country estate. Open out your napkins and ready yourself for a farm-grown feast, an authentic farm to table experience. Afterwards you will drive onward to Lecce, which will be home for the night. Elaborate Baroque architecture at every turn makes this is a showstopper of a town that’s best seen on foot. As you meander, a stop for tasting some local delicacies such as olive studded puccia leccese bread and sweet pasticciotto leccese cakes will leave you craving more. Evening at leisure and overnight. DAY 4: LECCE – OTRANTO – DEPRESSA – GALLIPOLI
Today's extraordinary scene will be filled with an emerald lake, turquoise seas and pink-hued hills. The pretty as- a-postcard harbor town of Otranto is where the journey trades town and country for a seaside sojourn. A stop at the beautiful bay of Porto Badisco provides a chance to try freshly caught sea urchins and sardines– a not-to-be-missed treat. Sip a selection of local wines at Castel di Salve, famous for growing its own Negroamaro, Primitivo, Malvasia Nera di Lecce and sweet Aleatico from the regional grapes. Then it’s on to the historic fishing port of Gallipoli where the sun sets just in time before checking into your hotel Evening at leisure. (Breakfast and Tastings included)
DAY 5: GALLIPOLI – NARDO – MANDURIA - GALLIPOLI
When in Gallipoli, practice the tradition of doing as the fishermen do. That means beginning the day with an early walk down to the fish markets where stalls are piled high with a dazzling array of seafood. Here, you will taste raw shrimp and shellfish made into seviche straight off the boat. Then stroll to the old town of Nardo, a treasure trove of some of Puglia’s finest Baroque architecture, where you can explore at your own pace. This is an area renowned for exquisite red wines, where later you will enjoy a visit to Manduria’s Museo della Civilta del Vino Primitivo for a guided tasting – and pay homage to the celebrated Primitivo grape. Then, as dusk descends, say farewell to Gallipoli with a sumptuous slow food dinner at a local restaurant. (Breakfast, Tastings and Dinner included)
DAY 6: GALLIPOLI – POLIGNANO A MARE – BARI
Within Gallipoli's peaceful honey-stone cloisters and Romanesque architecture are thousands of years of history. Step inside Santa Maria di Cerrate to discover a monastery with roots deep in Puglia’s rich food culture as you learn its history on a guided tour. Leaving the monastery behind, your journey will climb the coastal road up to Polignano a Mare – the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’. Whether you explore the watchtower ruins, wander through the Arco della Porta, slip inside the 13th century Mother Church or simply gaze across the idyllic shoreline, this ancient cliff-top town is yours to explore as you wish. And with that, it’s time to say goodbye to this exquisite region and its epicurean delights, as the journey rounds up back in Bari where you will overnight. (Breakfast included)
DAY 7: DEPARTURE
This morning after breakfast, transfer to the airport for departure flight back home (OR) perhaps consider extending your stay further in Italy with us!
