This is a ThirdHome tailored private culinary small-group journey (ideal for 4-10 people) and not a commercial group tour. This customized journey allows members to either choose from setting their own travel dates in you already have your own small-group wishing to travel together (OR) you may opt to join-in on an already scheduled journey with others. Experience 6 nights/7 days on this experiential culinary journey of The Cape (inspired by the experts of SAVEUR Magazine), which follows the journey of food to source in the most literal and historic sense. Commencing with a three-night stay on a working estate with a heritage that dates back to 1692, celebrate the simple pleasures and abundance of farm life. You’ll taste your way through a seasonal sample of the 300 varieties of edible plants in the gardens and harvest ingredients to create sensory combinations for the table. From the farmlands we journey to the city for a taste of the contemporary food scene in Cape Town. The cultural influences create a dynamic culinary hub from a city winery to craft spirits incorporating indigenous flora; traditional Cape Malay dishes to canteen-style tapas menus. Throughout this tasting journey you will experience the best the region has to offer in this extraordinary culinary capital of Africa.
SAVORING THE CAPE Journey Itinerary in brief:
DAY 1 - WELCOME TO CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA
Upon your arrival your driver will be waiting for you past the arrival hall to take you to your farm hotel, Babylonstoren. Meet your guide before dinner for a sunset stroll up to Babylonstoren koppie for a beautiful view of the farm and outstanding backdrop. Dinner will be in the farm’s pop-up restaurant, exclusive to hotel guests. (Lunch and Dinner included)
DAY 2 - BABYLONSTOREN FARM
Start the day by joining the gardeners on their morning harvest where they gather food for their restaurant. With the botanist Gundula leading the forage, you’ll trace the human story of trade and exploration through the origins of the 300-plus varieties of food plants. Over 360 years ago, the Dutch settlement in the Cape planted the oldest gardens in Southern Africa to serve as a refreshment station for the sailing ships on the spice route east. From its origins as an 18th century Cape Dutch Farm, Babylonstoren has evolved into an extraordinary place that links farm heritage across centuries. The garden is divided into fifteen clusters spanning vegetable areas, berries, bees, indigenous plants, ducks and chickens and includes a prickly pear maze. For the past 300 years water has flown from a stream into the gardens waterways to nourish the vegetation. Over lunch at The Greenhouse, the garden remains the focus. With innovative experimentation and collaboration between the culinary and gardening teams, farm to table food flows in delicious abundance. After lunch, you head towards Paarl where you’ll meet with artisan chocolate producer, Pieter de Villiers, a local electronic engineer, who turned his love for chocolate into a rapidly-growing business. You’ll take an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at how Pieter makes his chocolate, from bean to bar, before he guides you through a tasting of his single origin chocolates. You return to the farm with time to explore a little further on the bike or enjoy a late afternoon row on the farm dam. Dinner will be at your leisure tonight; we recommend sampling the gastronomic delights at the Delaire Graff Estate, a short distance from the farm. (Breakfast and Lunch included)
DAY 3 - FRANSCHHOEK
This morning you’ll be driven into Franschhoek, ‘foraging’ along the way as you visit local producers to buy produce for lunch. You’ll select some favourites from the farm shop and then hit the road, stopping close to the hotel to pick up locally-made cheese and olive oil before continuing to Moreson estate and the Bread & Wine restaurant, where you’ll meet local chef Neill Jewel and his wife Tina. We select an assortment of Neill’s charcuterie and Tina’s home-baked breads before continuing on your way, stopping at a family-owned coffee roaster for a morning cuppa. Your next stop is at a local olive grove, where you’ll select your favourites from a range of pickled olives, tapenades and pastes. Our destination is a garagiste winery high on the hills overlooking the Franschhoek Valley. You’ll spend the morning with a consultant winemaker and his wife, tasting some of the astounding wines she started making “as a hobby”, now very highly regarded by Franschhoek’s top chefs. After your tasting, you’ll picnic on a feast of local produce with a glass (or several) of wine with them. After lunch options include exploring the boutiques and galleries of Franschhoek on foot; or for the more active - a hike on the La Motte Estate. Dinner this evening is in the acclaimed Babel restaurant on the estate. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included)
DAY 4 - CAPE TOWN
You’ll say farewell to the gorgeous Babylonstoren this morning and be taken to Cape Town, or the Mother City as the locals call it. On the way you’ll visit M’hudi, one of the first wholly black-owned wineries in the Cape, owned and managed by the Rangaka family. You will sit down with members of the family as they recall their move from corporate success to the wine business. You’ll taste their Platinum wines before continuing to Stellenbosch for a short walk in the historic centre of the town. After lunch at the spectacular Jordan Estate in Stellenbosch, you’ll continue to the city arriving late afternoon to check in to your boutique hotel, Kensington Place. We’ll provide you with dinner suggestions or you may choose to sample the seasonal menu offered at Kensington. (Breakfast and Lunch included)
DAY 5 - CAPE TOWN CULINARY & WINE EXPLORING
After breakfast it’s a short drive to the historic heart of the city and the Company Gardens. You’ll meet with the curator of the newly established VOC Vegetable Garden, a working vegetable and herb garden. The garden serves to highlight the need for urban food gardens and promotes the development of community gardens in undeveloped open spaces in the city. From here it’s a short stroll to a local coffee roaster for a tasting of Africa’s coffee heritage. The roastery specializes in single origin, unblended coffee beans sourced through direct fair trade with six African countries. You’ll lunch at one of the city’s many trendy restaurants, following the meal with a wine tasting from the only urban winery in South Africa. Signal Hill Winery receives grapes in the middle of the city, crushes and presses them, ferments their juice into wine, barrel ages it and then bottles it onsite! Their wines are made in very small batches, for example the Clos d’Oranje produces only 600 bottles per vintage, making it the most sought after South African red wine.
n the late afternoon you will catch the cable car up Table Mountain for a gentle stroll around the flat mountaintop and a stunning sunset (weather permitting). We’ll have you back down shortly after sunset in time for dinner. Dinner is on your own tonight, experiencing some of the fine cuisine Cape Town is renowned for. (Breakfast and Lunch included)
DAY 6 - CAPE TOWN TASTING & SIGHTSEEING
You’ll spend the morning with a talented private chef who will share some of the tricks of his trade in menu planning, shopping and preparation as you meet some of Cape Town’s best producers. Leaving your chef to prepare for dinner, you’ll continue towards the coast where a scenic, easy walk along the shore from the historic village of Muizenberg brings you to Kalk Bay, a popular seaside town with its historic fishing community. You’ll visit the harbour where many of Cape Town’s restaurants source their seafood and fisher folk sell their fresh catch of rock lobster (June – September), snoek, yellow tail and many other local favourites. You’ll enjoy a light lunch at one of Kalk Bay’s favourite local hang-outs before returning to the city via the breath-taking Chapman’s Peak Drive. You will have some time to relax before your guide collects you for your final locally hosted dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included)
DAY 7 - DEPARTURE
After breakfast, your guide will drive you back to Cape Town International for your onward travel. Safe journey homewards!
