ECO EXPLORING MIDDLE EARTH'S WONDERLAND Journey Itinerary in brief:
DAY 1: ARRIVAL AUCKLAND
Upon arrival into Auckland airport, private transfer to your hotel (choose from 4-star Deluxe or 5-star Luxury Accommodations)
DAY 2: AUCKLAND - SUBLIME LOCAL TOUR
This morning after breakfast, embark on a private, full-day tour of sublime Auckland. See verdant gardens and walk the vibrant, restaurant and bar-lined waterfront. At the Viaduct Basin, board an America’s Cup sailing yacht and cruise around the Hauraki Gulf. In the hands of your experienced crew, trim the sails, steer the yacht or sit back and absorb the serene beauty of Waitemata Harbour. After lunch at a local restaurant, visit the Auckland War Memorial Museum, which offers insight into New Zealand’s people, flora, fauna and landforms through a series of fascinating exhibits and Polynesian artifacts, including an 80-foot-long Maori war canoe from 1836. Spend the evening at leisure. (Breakfast & Lunch included)
DAY 3: ROTORUA & JOURNEY TO MIDDLE-EARTH
Today, travel south through the lush pasture-lands of Waikato to rural Matamata, home to the iconic “Middle-Earth” filming location featured in the hit adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. After lunch, continue on to the town of Rotorua, New Zealand’s cultural heartland. Marvel as the earth’s crust bubbles and steams from the abundance of geothermal activity roiling just below the surface. Adjourn to your boutique lodge, gathering in the evening to enjoy a private dinner. and overnight. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included)
DAY 4: ROTORUA - MAORI CULTURE, HOT SPRINGS & KIWIS
Begin your day with a visit to Te Puia, home to New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute, Pōhutu geyser and Whakarewarewa, the Living Maori Village. Immerse yourself in the traditions of the indigenous Maori people and witness nature’s geothermal might as geysers spout and mud pools boil. Next, visit Rainbow Springs Nature Park’s Kiwi Encounter Facility, an Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy-sponsored organization committed to preserving this iconic native species. Enjoy insider access to the facility’s hatchery, feeding room, nursery and outdoor enclosures, gaining expert insights into the plight and preservation of this embattled species. Evening at your leisure. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)
DAY 5: NAPIER - WINE COUNTRY
Travel to the modern seaside city of Napier, with its lush gardens, orchards and vineyards. Check in to your boutique farm & wine lodge, situated in Hawke's Bay. Spend the remainder of this day and the next discovering Napier’s Art Deco buildings; visiting with local artists and viewing their paintings, sculptures and pots; and meeting local food and wine producers, who let you sample their products. Enjoy lunch at a local winery; then, meet your Maori guide and visit a rural coastal settlement, where you gain insight into residents’ spirituality and rich culture. Evening at your leisure. DAYS 6 & 7: NAPIER REGION EXPLORING
Spend the following two days in Napier golfing or exploring the property and surrounding area. Take in various resort activities such as clay target shooting, horseback riding, hiking along coastal walking trails, ocean kayaking, whitewater rafting or relaxing on the local beaches. Perhaps consider other optional add-on excursions to nearby sites of interest - please inquire for more details. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included on DAY 6; Breakfast & Lunch included on DAY 7)
DAY 8: NAPIER TO QUEENSTOWN
Depart Napier this morning and fly to Queenstown on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Spend the next day touring the breathtaking region, beginning at the historic settlement of Arrowtown. Proceed to the Gibbston Valley, stopping briefly at the Kawarau Bridge, where you can visit the home of the world’s first commercial bungee jump. Sample local vintages at Gibbston Valley Winery before returning to Queenstown. Late afternoon, ascend the Skyline Gondola to Bob’s Peak for spectacular panoramic views. Return to your hotel for evening at leisure and overnight. (Breakfast included)
DAYS 9 & 10: QUEENSTOWN REGION EXPLORING
Spend the following two days in Queenstown exploring the surrounding area. Take in various resort activities of perhaps a relaxing spa treatment. On your last day (DAY 10), drive to Lake Wakatipu, where you take to the braided channels of the Dart River in a jet boat. Absorb views of stunning snow-capped mountains, ancient native forests, waterfalls and glacial valleys. Then, set out on a Funyak experience, during which you paddle and drift downstream in an inflatable canoe. Return to Queenstown, driving through beautiful countryside that inspired many films, among them The Lord of the Rings. Overnights in Queenstown. (Breakfast & Lunch included each day)
DAY 11: DEPART QUEENSTOWN
After breakfast this morning, transfer to the airport and board your home-bound flight (OR) continue onward to another region of New Zealand or perhaps elsewhere in the South Pacific/Oceania region.
