This is a ThirdHome tailored private small-group golfing journey (ideal for 4-12 people) and not a commercial group tour, that has a set pre-determined date as noted below. This customized journey allows members to golf (and/or sightsee together) along with specific excursions, dining and regional opportunities that will make for a memorable journey experience. Experience 12 nights/13 days teeing it up and eating your way through Italy's amazing golf and dining portfolio on this fully-escorted fascinating cultural journey through mountains, parklands and links found in three of Italy’s most famous destinations: Lake Como, Florence and Rome. You will spend time among the panoramic vistas of Lake Como and Bellagio, travel to the birthplace of the Renaissance which is Florence, stopping en route in Milan to gaze upon in awe at Leonardo's Last Supper. While in Lake Como you will enjoy a round at the prestigious Villa d'Este Glof Club; in Florence you will play at the country's first course, the Ugolino Golf Club Explore and take in the scenic surrounding area with visits to Siena, Pisa and San Gimignano. The journey continues into the heart of Rome among all its history and artistic architectural glory including St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, the Coliseum, Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and the Pantheon. Excursion onward down to the romantic southern Amalfi Coast including Positano and Amalfi and view the remarkably well preserved ruins of Pompeii. While in Tuscany, enjoy more impressive golfing at the prestigious Pavoniere Golf Club, where the former estate of Leopoldo de Medici resides.
GOLF & GASTRONOMY OF ITALY Brief Itinerary:
DAY 1 - ARRIVAL MILAN to LAKE COMO
Arrive Milan where you will be met at the airport by your guide who will assist you to your private transfer awaiting to take you to Lake Como. Check-in to the Albergo Terminus Resort, a 4-star deluxe property located in downtown Como, facing the lake. The remainder of the day is free to relax and enjoy Como. Enjoy a Welcome Dinner with your group in a local restaurant within walking distance of the hotel.
DAY 2 - LAKE COMO GOLFING & SIGHTSEEING
For the golfers, today you will play a round at the Villa d’Este Golf Club, located 5 miles from the hotel. The course winds its way through chestnut groves, birch and pine woods. It is considered one of the most varied and challenging par 69 courses in the country. A superb clubhouse with views over the course and the lake of Montorfano adds the final touch to this tranquil and elegant site. For the non-golfers spend the day visiting charming Lugano, the "Monte Carlo of Switzerland". The 45 minute trip itself is a treat, much of it traveling along the shore of picturesque Lake Lugano. Your guide will show you this vivacious, lakeside city with its chic boutiques, bars and pavement cafes tucked in the spaghetti maze of cobblestone streets. Everyone will the meet up and reconnect in the afternoon with time to relax and refresh before joining a local guide around 6:00 PM in the hotel lobby for a guided walking tour of the town. We’ll visit Como’s most important churches; the Duomo built from 1396 to 1740 and the Basilica di San Fedele admired for its upper arcade and round windows decorated with Romanesque bas-reliefs. After the medieval Tower which was built in 1192 after a war fought against Milan we’ll explore the Piazza Cavour. Dinner this evening is on your own.
DAY 3 - LAKE COMO & BELLAGIO EXPLORATION
All guests today will enjoy a full day exploring the lake with a local guide beginning with a private motorboat excursion with the first stop being in famous Bellagio, the pearl of the lake. The village is characterized by century-old buildings, stone lanes and picturesque cobbled stairways filled with shops showcasing the finest Italian wares. Visits also include a pair of the lake’s most beautiful and famous villas – Villa Balbianello and Villa Carlotta. Lunch will be served on the terrace of the prestigious Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni. Return to your hotel with evening on your own.
DAY 4 - LAKE COMO GOLFING, SIGHTSEEING & COOKING CLASS
For the golfers today you will play Monticello. This is one of the great classic courses in Italy, made famous by the Italian Open championships held here and by the very meticulous maintenance and green-keeping on both 18 hole courses. The Rosso (Red) Course is a straight forward layout with the Alps as a backdrop and fairways lined by clusters of trees. Its challenges are clearly in view and judiciously spread in order to avoid overwhelming the average player. No. 7 is a memorable par 3 measuring almost 200 yards and protected on all sides by water. For the non-golfers, you are invited to on-board a private motorboat for an excursion to Lake Maggiore where you will visit Stresa and the three islands as well. Lunch on your own before returning to the hotel early in the afternoon. Tonight everyone will roll up their sleeves to experience a cooking class where you will learn how to prepare several signature recipes in the Italian tradition. Taste your way through the classic sauces (Pesto, Bolognese, Amatriciana) and make gnocchi and tagliatelle or try tossing a pizza, ending with a marvelous tiramisu. Great food, fun, camaraderie and good wine will all be had! Return to your hotel for the evening.
DAY 5 - LAKE COMO TO MILAN & FLORENCE
Mid-morning check-out and private transfer to Milan, famous for fashion and fascinating architecture such Castello Sforzesco, Teatro la Scala and the Duomo di Milano (Milan's Cathedral) which is the 5th largest church in the world. You will be welcomed by a local guide to begin your city tour with the extraordinary fresco by Leonardo da Vinci, the Last Supper. Your visit will include time for shopping one of the most famous fashion centres in the world along Via Monte Napoleone in Milan, with time for a restful lunch break on your own. At approximately 4:30 PM, everyone will gather at the Cathedral for a private transfer to the railway station where you will board the 5:15pm train to Florence. Upon arrival at 6:55PM, private transfer to the 5-star luxury Relais Santa Croce Hotel, located in the historic centre of Florence in an 18th century palazzo. Freshen up and at approximately 8:00PM you will be seated in the Relais’ main dining room for a set dinner. Remainder of the evening at your leisure.
DAY 6 - FLORENCE GOLFING & SIGHTSEEING
Golfers today will play at the Firenze Ugolino Golf Club, the oldest course in Italy. The layout follows the natural contours of the Chianti slopes through indigenous olive trees, maritime pines and broom. Lift your eyes and see incomparable Tuscan beauty with castles, farmhouses and vineyards in all directions. The course isn’t long but the greens are small and well defended by bunkers. For the non-golfers, enjoy a guided tour of the Uffizi Gallery. The two groups will then later reconnect this afternoon to meet-up with a local guide in the lobby for a tour of the town walking its picturesque narrow streets. Visit the wonderful cathedral, the Battistero and the bell tower. Dinner this evening is on your own.
DAY 7 - FLORENCE & SIENA SIGHTSEEING
Today is filled with much to enjoy. After breakfast, depart for Siena on a guided tour of this town's renowned architectural beauty beginning with its Piazza del Campo, one of the most marvellous medieval squares in Italy plus the Palio, the medieval horse race. Continue onward to visit the charming medieval village of San Gimignano, famous for its towers, unforgettable skyline and its architectural masterpiece town center. A lunch will be served in a local trattoria before a short guided tour of the village. Depart San Gimignano at approximately 4:00 PM to reach one of the best vineyards in the Chianti area. Enjoy a wonderful wine tasting accompanied by snacks before returning to your hotel. Evening at your leisure.
DAY 8 - TUSCANY GOLFING & PISA SIGHTSEEING
This morning is at your leisure for another opportunity to visit fascinating Florence. At midday, the golfers will depart the hotel for the 40-minute drive to Le Pavoniere Golf Club. This Arnold Palmer layout is found on the former estate of Leopoldo de Medici. The course is nicely secluded with a links feel and a collection of Tuscan-style brick walls and bridges used around the water hazards plus of course the ever-present cypresses of Tuscany. For the non-golfers, embarking on a 1-hr train ride through the countryside to Pisa accompanied by a guide. Upon arrival visit the town famous for The Leaning Tower and have time to relax in the Piazza dei Miracoli. Everyone will reconnect back at the hotel later in the afternoon. Dinner this evening is on your own.
DAY 9 - SIENA TO ROME
Today depart Siena and travel to Rome by train (90-minute journey). Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by a private coach and guide whose orientation tour of the town will include the Coliseum and the Imperial Forums and its series of monumental piazzas built between 46 B.C. (the Forum of Caesar) and 113 A.D. Afterward check-in at luxury 5-star Hotel Bernini Bristol near Via Veneto in the heart of Rome. Enjoy a guided late afternoon walking spree to the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon and Spanish Steps. Dinner this evening is on your own.
DAY 10 - ROME GOLFING & SIGHTSEEING
Golfers today will play a round at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, future host of the 2022 Ryder Cup. The course is found 10 miles from Rome and is built around an 11th century castle, where views of Saint Peter’s dome may be seen from several holes. Non-golfers today will enjoy a visit to the Borghese Gallery. The museum displays works by some of the world's greatest Renaissance painters and is home to an impressive number of Bernini sculptures. Remainder of the late afternoon and evening at your leisure. Dinner this evening is on your own.
DAY 11 - ROME & POMPEII
Today the group will depart for the amazing Amalfi Coast and to Pompeii. Journey on on a 1-hr train ride to Naples where a guide will meet and greet you at the rail station. You will then transfer by private coach 30-minutes away to the ruins of Pompeii's excavations. It’s believed the town which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site today was founded in the 7th or 6th century and became a Roman colony in 80 BC. The ancient city and its artifacts are remarkably well preserved providing extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city during the Pax Romana era. After the two hour guided tour, enjoy a light lunch before visiting the Amalfi Coast for some free time in Positano and Amalfi before returning to Naples. Departure from Naples back to Rome by train will be at approximately 6:00 PM. Upon arrival back into Rome you will be transferred to your hotel. Dinner is on your own this evening.
DAY 12 - ROME SIGHTSEEING
This morning enjoy a guided visit to the Vatican City, whose 109 acres makes it the smallest sovereign state in the world. You will have time to view the world’s largest church, St. Peter’s Basilica including the St. Peter’s Square (designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini – the namesake of our hotel), the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums. The tour's focus will primarily be dedicated to the glorious Sistine Chapel where you will view the renowned frescoes on the ceiling and above the altar by Michelangelo. Lunch is on your own and the afternoon is at your leisure to further explore whatever you haven't already seen in Rome. This evening the group will enjoy a Farewell Dinner served on the Bernini Hotel's splendid roof-top restaurant where panoramic views of Rome are among the best in the city. This makes for a grand finale!
DAY 13 - DEPARTURE from ROME
Check-out and private transfer to the airport for your departing flight.
