Sam and Leann have been THIRDHOME members since 2016 and have managed to take 14 trips by leveraging their Florida Beach Getaway on Exchange. Using their Keys for a London girls trips, luxury Florida staycations ski trips and much more, the Jarczynski family are pros at getting the most value out of their second home.

Get to know Sam and Leann and how they’re making the most of their retirement below.

Sam Jarczynski Member Spotlight

How did you get involved with THIRDHOME?

A close friend and THIRDHOME early investor, Marilyn Connelly, recommended THIRDHOME to us.

Sam Jarczynski Member Spotlight

Where are you based?
Clearwater Florida, USA

Sam Jarczynski Member Spotlight

Who do you usually travel with?
My wife Leann Jarczynski primarily but we have both taken “guys trips”, “girls trips” and family vacations also.

What do you do for a living?
We retired early after selling our business and decided to travel and do adventures while we are still physically able to do the things we want.

Sam Jarczynski Member Spotlight
What are your favorite travel hobbies?
Travel hobbies are dictated by where we go! Whitewater rafting in Colorado. Sailing in California. Hiking in South Carolina. Music Festival in the Florida Keys. Downhill Mountain biking. Snowboarding. Whale watching. Electric bike rental along the Pacific Coast Highway while the PCH was closed due to bridges washing out. Swimming in a cave in Texas that we hiked to. Renting a small two person, open vehicle called a Slingshot and driving the Continental Divide. Having a “staycation” on the beach near our house and having friends over. And of course dining and drinking while meeting new people. I could go on forever!
Sam Jarczynski Member Spotlight
In your past travels with THIRDHOME, what was your favorite destination and what did you love about it?
Monterey California. The house we stayed in was close to everything. Gorgeous inside and out with a tiered, landscaped, backyard that rivaled a movie set. We visited Monterey, Carmel, Pebble Beach, etc. While whale watching we saw several kinds of whales including the elusive Orcas or “killer whales” We took a sunset cruise, biked the PCH, ate fabulous meals and met too many people to count.
Sam Jarczynski Member Spotlight
What’s the next destination you are eyeing to travel to with THIRDHOME?
My wife went with a girlfriend to London and stayed in a Flat in downtown London during Christmas time. She said it was amazing. She is encouraging London again but we are also looking at Costa Rica (surfing for me) and Amsterdam. It is so hard to choose.

What do you love most about your property with THIRDHOME?
The THIRDHOME members/guests are all so friendly and easy to work with.
Sam Jarczynski Member Spotlight
Compared to other exchange and rental platforms, how has your experience been hosting other THIRDHOME members?
We don’t use any other platforms with our current Condo. We had another condo in the past that we used another platform with and were always a little scared about the screening process; we were kind of on our own. With THIRDHOME, we don’t have that problem or concern.
Sam Jarczynski Member Spotlight
Any personal/family achievements you’d like to share?
My wife and I were able to retire at a fairly young age. We have two boys. One son lives in Manhattan after graduating with his Masters and the other attends the University of Florida. THIRDHOME gives us the flexibility to travel places now that we are “empty nesters” and we couldn’t be happier. These days, in our early 50’s, you hear about friends, family and strangers that have catastrophic illness, unexpected death, crashes, etc. that don’t allow a person to actually enjoy their lives as they get older or are unable to physically do things. My advice, like the song says, is live like you were dying.

How has THIRDHOME changed the way you travel?
Staying in the most beautiful places all over the country and world, for less expense and less worry? Let me say that that THIRDHOME is our preferred way to travel now. Hands down no comparison.
Sam Jarczynski Member Spotlight
What is the nicest amenity you have encountered while staying at a THIRDHOME property?
The backyard of the Monterey California house. Can you even call that an amenity? It’s hard to believe that I would say this but it was so beautiful. Fountains, fire-pits, discreet lighting along paths through the most amazing landscaping. Sitting by an open fire drinking a few cold beers and wine after a day on the Pacific Ocean. Wildlife around us by firelight. Amazing.

What makes a THIRDHOME stay so special?
Beautiful homes in excellent locations with the feeling of being at home as opposed to being in a hotel.

Sam Jarczynski Member Spotlight

How is staying in a THIRDHOME different than other types of accommodations?
That it is a home, not a hotel.

How would you describe THIRDHOME to a friend?
I recommend THIRDHOME every chance I get. If they have a second home I say sign up. If they don’t I tell them to buy a second home and then sign up.
Sam Jarczynski Member Spotlight

What’s the most memorable restaurant you’ve eaten at during one of your trips?

A small Vail Village place called Sweet Basil. Sitting at the bar eating a sweet corn bruschetta and having a few cocktails. Or a snowcat ride up the Vail mountain in the snow to a restaurant with incredible service and food. Or some Tex-Mex in Austin Texas.
Sam Jarczynski Member Spotlight
Any travel tips for fellow members?
Get out and live your life while you still can. My wife and I both lost our parents while in their 60s and 70s. While spending time with them near the end they all regretted not doing more. My Mother passed quickly from cancer. Very soon after my Father started dialysis unexpectedly and could not travel. We had booked an Alaska Cruise that he was unable to make. My advice is take that trip, go somewhere new, go somewhere you enjoyed in the past. Just GO.

In your past travels with THIRDHOME, what was your favorite destination and what did you love about it?
Tuscany. This summer we spent a week with 3 other couples at a fabulous villa in the hills overlooking Florence. Our group cooked dinners together in the chef’s kitchen, dined outdoors under the pergola, danced by the light of the moon, swam in the pool and hiked the olive groves and vineyards that surrounded the property. Oops, almost forgot, Florence was only a 15-minute drive away so we went to town a couple times!

“I’ll tell you where I’d go. Zihuatanejo.  It’s in Mexico.  A little place on the Pacific Ocean…..It’s where I want to live the rest of my life.”  So said Tim Robbins’ character “Alex” to Morgan Freeman’s “Ellis Boyd” in the 1994 screen classic, The Shawshank Redemption.

SPOILER ALERT: Eventually, Alex and Ellis are reunited in Mexico following a lengthy incarceration (watch the movie for more detail) and the fishing village is as beautiful as described by Alex.

zihuatanejo

After spending a week in Zihuatanejo and sister city Ixtapa I believe Alex was on to something. I could spend the rest of my life in this town and be a happily retired guy.

Zihuatanejo

Present day Zihuatanejo (referred to as “Zihua” by locals) is no longer a “sleepy” fishing village but is, in fact, the 3rd leading tourist destination in Mexico behind Cancun and Puerto Vallarta.

Zihuatanejo

Although cruise ships now dock here on a regular basis, Zihua retains a high level of Mexico charm with cultural attractions and several drop-dead gorgeous beaches.

Zihuatanejo

There is a daily thriving market, enough seafood restaurants to last a lifetime and a  “Malecon” with strolling mariachis at night.

Zihuatanejo

Mornings are particularly memorable in El Centro as the fishing boats return early in the morning loaded with the fresh catch of the day which ranges from tuna to red snapper to clams and oysters.

Zihuatanejo

Get there early (before 8 am) for the best selection of fresh fish.

Zihuatanejo

Whereas, Zihuatanejo is old Mexico charming and a delightful place to walk around and spend the day, Ixtapa, 20 minutes down the road, has a “luxury resort” relaxing feel.

Zihuatanejo

Our THIRDHOME for the week was Casa Cuatro located in Punta Ixtapa, a gated community that we never wanted to leave.

Zihuatanejo

The home, as I’ve come to expect from staying in THIRDHOME properties, was spacious, beautifully decorated, and had a terrace you could hang out in all day and night.

The Punta Ixtapa community features 6 stunning private beaches, 3 beach clubhouses with restaurants, several pools that stayed empty during most of our stay, a fitness center and tennis courts.  Since Casa Cuatro was located right on Don Rodrigo Beach shoes were an optional accessory much of the week.

There were many highlights of our week in Paraiso (Spanish for Paradise) but here are my personal favorites:

Zihuatanejo

Martina, our cocinera (chef), preparing authentic Mexican breakfast specialties and great seafood dinners each evening.

Zihuatanejo

The “Pelican and Sunrise” movie we got to watch every morning as literally hundreds of pelicans danced and dove for breakfast in the ocean directly in front of us while the sun rose over the mountains.

Zihuatanejo

Hanging out at the Don Rodrigo Club restaurant drinking margaritas while watching the NFL playoffs and explaining American football to David and Jose, our waiters.

Zihuatanejo

Watching the 4 Mexican Pole Flyers (Voldadores) climb and descend from a 100-foot pole upside down hanging from ropes while the 5th “Flyer plays Mayan tunes with a flute standing at the top of the pole. Wow!!!

Zihuatanejo

Renting a bicycle and pedaling the Ixtapa Cicloplista, 7.5 miles of bike path winding through Ixtapa’s lush forest. Somewhat hilly but a beautiful ride.

Zihuatanejo

Experiencing releasing baby sea turtles to the ocean at sunset from the beach in Zihuatanejo.

Despite the tremendous experiences I have when traveling around this beautiful country I read the travel advisories and I know there is trepidation about visiting any number of places in Mexico at this time. According to a recent survey conducted by the Mexican Tourism Board, 94% of visitors indicated that their vacation “exceeded their expectations” and 86% said they plan on returning in the following 6 months. I am happy to report that this THIRDHOME trip exceeded my expectations and I look forward to returning to Mexico.

After this summer we will have taken our 9 year old daughter to all continents except Antartica. This we are hoping to do this next Christmas. We also enjoy traveling to take our daughter to surf competitions for her around the world.

How has THIRDHOME changed the way you travel?

Instead of booking hotels we always look for THIRDHOME first and then can invite family and friends to come. It sure makes the trips more fun to have friends to come along with us.

finn
What is the nicest amenity you have encountered while staying at a THIRDHOME property?

Trump Towers in Waikiki staff was beyond excellent. We really enjoyed the amenities we received.

How would you describe THIRDHOME to a friend?

Its the best travel club to join if you have a really nice 2nd or 3rd home even if you don’t normally rent it. Its like a trade but you have the control of who is coming to visit plus insurance to cover you if there is damage.

finn

What’s the most memorable restaurant you’ve eaten at during one of your trips?

Galapagos. The staff went and got all kinds of fresh fish and seafood and steaks and grilled for us. They fed some amazing birds and we enjoyed the hot tub while we were waiting to eat. It was a wonderful memory.

Any travel tips for fellow members?

Do watches for anything you are interested in. Don’t wait to book as it will be gone and browse new properties often.

Finn

What makes a THIRDHOME stay so special?

You get to deal directly with the owners and they tend to tell you great spots to visit as they know their properties and areas so well. They give more attention than a hotel or company rental ever would. All the homes have been vetted and are higher end properties.

How is staying in a THIRDHOME different than other types of accommodations?

Again, I would say dealing with the owners and the level of the properties you stay at are a cut above.
