One lives in Surrey, England while the other lives in Los Angeles. This swap, is an example of primary home exchange, and is defined as the usage of an owner’s primary home that they live in full time. A vacation home exchange, on the other hand, involves the exchange of a second home, investment property, or fractional resort property. THIRDHOME is a home exchange that facilitates vacation home exchanges.

Reciprocal vs. Direct Exchange

A direct exchange is where two homeowners coordinate calendars to stay in each other’s properties during the same period. Direct exchanges were popular among academic groups in the 1950s because academia shared similar schedules in which they could travel. Those outside of academia didn’t have the same flexibility in schedule, so the trend didn’t catch on. Eventually, the Internet allowed exchange companies to create marketplaces where direct exchanges weren’t necessary. A reciprocal exchange or indirect exchange, allows more flexibility for an owner by utilizing a credit system. THIRDHOME, for example, uses the reciprocal exchange model by awarding Keys to owners when they deposit stays. This, in turn, allows an owner to use their credits (Keys in our case) during a time that suits them.

A simultaneous swap is the most common kind of exchange. This means you both holiday in the other’s property at the same time. 

non-simultaneous swap is a little more difficult to arrange as it means one person holidays in your property whilst you stay somewhere else, and vice versa.

hospitality exchange is a final option for a house swap, and this requires you to host your exchange family in your house whilst you are still living there.

You can choose whichever option suits you best and arrange it either directly with your exchange family or via a home exchange partner. More recently, home exchange has become a valuable tool for homeowners to leverage their vacation property for world travel. The Origins of THIRDHOME and How the Club Works

How it Began

The concept for this home exchange program began to take shape back in 1986. After having been one of the top Real Estate Agents on Hilton Head, THIRDHOME Chairman & CEO Wade Shealy co-founded one of the largest and most successful real estate firms in South Carolina. Wade kept noticing that no matter how excited clients initially were about their second home purchase, almost all of them were back in his office within five years wanting to sell. As his buyers originally purchased vacation homes with grand dreams of it being part of generations to come, they were now ready to sell because it had become a burden. Visits to the second home felt more like an obligation rather than a well-deserved getaway. When he asked, Why? It was always the same answer:

“As much as we’ve loved having a place on Hilton Head, we feel we’ve seen and done everything there is to do. We’d like to look at buying somewhere else, so we can experience new things on our trips.”

Members have access to reserve any home in the Club as long as they have enough “Keys” or travel credits. You earn Keys upon depositing time in your own home. The more desirable the time you give, the more Keys you get. An interactive world map provides a bird’s-eye view to explore the world. Our dynamic website also allows members to set criteria for the kind of stay they desire— private homes, estates, full-service, pet-friendly, and yachts, to name a few examples. The more flexible your schedule, the more options you will have. Simply go online, browse, click and instantly reserve a stay.

THIRDHOME recently launched a partnership with TurnKey, a luxury vacation rental management company based in the US. This strategic partnership comes at the perfect time as the increased demand for private vacation homes is on the rise, and travelers are booking more drive-to family & group vacations with shorter lead times. 

What does this mean for THIRDHOME members?

We are thrilled with this new relationship and the access it brings our members to sought-out destinations, increased flexibility in travel dates, and most importantly, more choices.

This structure of this new collaboration is slightly different. Here’s how it works: When a new TurnKey homeowner joins, they are able to open up as many weeks as they like on their calendar, but then once 2 weeks are booked, no more weeks can be reserved by members. As you can see in the example below, this particular home has 37 different weeks.

How to find and reserve homes with multiple weeks of open availability.

Reserving a home is similar to making other Exchange reservations with just a few slight differences. First, in order to find these homes, select the “More Filters” option and select “Open Availability”

Once you find a home, select “View Availability.” Dates that are shaded gray are not available. Dates in gold are available to be booked.

Select the timeframe you wish to reserve to check the Key value and Exchange Fee. Each stay will be 7 days total. Then, book trip as normal.

A Brief History

Over the years just as The Club has evolved, so too has the logo and branding. We are a thriving membership of over 11,000 and continue to welcome new members daily. With the continual evolution of The Club, we felt the time was right to update our branding. We are pleased to share our new logo, the meaning behind it, and a walk down memory lane to see just how far we’ve come in the past ten years.

The concept of THIRDHOME began at the end of 2009 when Founder and CEO Wade Shealy put his dream of creating a private club for second homeowners into action. It sparked from his career in luxury real estate, where he had come to know many second home owners. He noticed a common thread between past clients coming back to resell their dream vacation home and prospective clients who were hesitant to purchase. Both sides expressed a similar FOMO: Fear of missing out on other vacations or travel opportunities because they felt bound to the second home they already owned. With the basic premise of an exchange club scratched out on the back of a napkin, and a commitment from 50 friends and former clients with luxury second homes, THIRDHOME took flight in 2010.

Introducing Our New Logo!

When designing the new logo, we felt it important to add key imagery to the design. Since the beginning, Keys have been at the cornerstone of THIRDHOME. They serve as the currency of The Club and drive all activity within the Exchange. Both figuratively and physically, keys allow the user to open doors or access new opportunities that may otherwise remain closed. That is the essence of THIRDHOME!

The dove has taken more shape and is proudly perched upon a key, ready to take flight. Keep reading to see why the dove was added to the logo in 2013.

With the addition of two other luxury travel offerings, in 2018 specific colors were designated for each product line.

In the new design, in addition to the assigned color, the key head varies slightly within each brand. The dove mark remains the same.

Our Logo Through the Years


It’s all about the home. Coming up with a name was easy, as it was built on the concept of using your second home to access a “3rd Home.” The inaugural logo reflects the basic premise of The Club.


Introducing the dove. Realizing there was more to the story than a single home image, the imagery of a dove was added to the name. The dove species is known to reuse their own or other species’ nests. Great care is made when the dove builds their nest, and many times they will return to that same nesting site year after year.


Luxury and refinement. The bird took on a more sleek design and the font was updated to reflect modern times.

This fresh new logo is just one way The Club is evolving. As we enter our second decade, we will continue to be led by our mission to enrich our members’ lives by inspiring them to travel to new and exciting places, experience different cultures, and create lasting memories, all while saving them time and money.
