When travelers are considering insurance for a trip, we often hear questions about travel insurance coverage provided with a credit card and how our plan differs. It’s a fair question. Why pay for something when you may already have access to a product or service? There are many differences, and there’s a reason so many people choose to buy a standalone travel insurance plan to protect their trip investment. While we can’t provide a specific comparison since all plans are different, we can point out some of the key differences to consider. For the purposes of this post, we’ll refer to a standalone travel insurance plan as a “comprehensive” travel insurance plan.

1. Number of benefits on the plan

Typically, a comprehensive travel insurance plan offers a longer list of benefits than a plan provided through a credit card. Review the full list of benefits offered by your credit card coverage to ensure it covers everything you think it will.

2. Coverage maximums

Many credit cards cap their Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption benefits at lower limits than might be found on comprehensive travel plans. Some credit cards may offer coverage up to $2,000 per trip, while others might offer up to $10,000 per trip. This may be sufficient, but many of our customers take trips in excess of this value. Our plan offers Trip Cancellation coverage for trip costs up to $25,000 and more. And keep in mind that the Trip Interruption benefit on USI’s plan may reimburse up to 200% of the trip cost.

When it comes to Trip Delay, our team found that most credit cards will only reimburse up to $500 per trip for lodging and other necessary travel. On the other hand, comprehensive travel insurance plans like our plan from USI may reimburse up to $2,500 in coverage for Trip Delay, depending on the plan and level purchased.

3. Covered reasons

Travel insurance offered through a credit card tends to include fewer covered reasons for Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption. This means that should something unexpected happen that causes you to cancel or interrupt your trip, it’s less likely that you’ll be covered in the event of a claim. Comprehensive travel insurance includes a long list of covered reasons. Read the policy for the full list.

4. Medical Expense and Emergency Medical Evacuation

Credit cards offering travel insurance benefits may not provide full medical protection required for your needs. Often, the benefits for medical expense coverage and evacuation on credit card plans are lower than those found on a comprehensive travel insurance plan. For example, USI’s comprehensive trip cancellation plan includes medical protection coverage up to $500,000 and Emergency Medical Evacuation coverage up to $1,000,000.

5. Optional Cancel For Any Reason upgrade

Credit card travel insurance generally does not offer the option to include the Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) upgrade. This is an important benefit that many travelers seek, especially now when travel can feel more unpredictable. Our comprehensive travel insurance plans offer this upgrade option, which gives many of our customers the added flexibility they need for more peace of mind. Just be sure to buy your plan early – CFAR is only available if you buy your plan within 14 days of your initial trip deposit. Don’t miss your opportunity!

6. Coverage for all trip costs

An important point to note is that credit card travel insurance only covers eligible travel expenses when the full amount of each expense was purchased with the credit card. On the other hand, with a comprehensive travel insurance plan, travelers can cover all of their expenses, no matter how they were paid.

7. Customer Service and Claims Assistance

Have you ever tried to call those huge credit card companies? Chances are, it may be difficult to get through to a person, let alone someone who is familiar with the travel insurance plan and can advise you on the coverage that best suits your needs. With USI Travel Insurance Services, you have access to knowledgeable support when you need it. The USI Customer Service staff are all non-commissioned, licensed insurance agents who focus entirely on travel insurance and helping travelers protect their trips.

If you need to file a claim, the USI Customer Service team can assist you with that, too. As a broker, USI acts as advocates for travelers during the claims process, and can help you navigate the process and any challenges with the claims administrator.

With this information in mind, hopefully next time you plan a trip it will be easier to know what to look for when researching travel insurance options. You can always visit our plan website, or contact the USI Travel Insurance Services Customer Service team for help selecting the best plan for your travel needs. Their representatives are available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time and can be reached at (855) 874-0156 or customercare@travelinsure.com. Be sure to mention you are traveling with ThirdHome, account #50054.

How did ThirdHome become the star of The Big Posh Holiday Swap

In March 2019, we met Plum Pictures, who have been producing innovative programming for major networks in the UK and US since 2007. After a few meetings, they asked if we would be open to them creating a show they would pitch to UK TV channels, streaming services, and content creators.

How did you decide on the format of The Big Posh Holiday Swap?

Initially, we were thinking of taking our successful Best Job on the Planet contest and creating a TV series from it (think Amazing Race meets The Apprentice). At the same time, we were exploring a behind-the-scenes docuseries that gave viewers a peek behind the curtain to see some of the incredible homes we have in the Club and to meet the members simultaneously. This format felt more authentic and a truer reflection of who we are as a Club. In late 2019, Plum Pictures created a taster video that they would use to pitch to content creators.

How would you describe the show?

The Big Posh Holiday Swap is a 6-part series where the viewer goes inside the homes and holidays of ThirdHome members, including behind-the-scenes shots as hosts prepare for guest arrivals, backstories of the homes themselves, and some of the distinguished homeowners. You’ll also get to meet ThirdHome’s Founder and CEO, Wade Shealy, and hear how ThirdHome started and has evolved over the years. In conjunction with showcasing some of the members’ incredible stays, you will also get a peek into the daily workings of ThirdHome, especially the European team in Spain. The series is beautifully shot and produced. It’s a great representation of the Club, the homes, and the experiences that members offer each other.

How did you decide which homes and members to feature in The Big Posh Holiday Swap?

We wanted to showcase a mix of properties that reflected the diverse range of homes in the Club. Not only did we want to highlight the international flavour of ThirdHome by featuring far-flung locations, but also show the different types of experiences that we offer, such as skiing, safari, beach holidays, and cultural stays.

We were also looking to balance a blend of property showcases, member trips, and behind-the-scenes goings-on with our team that put all these stays together. Within the trips, we also wanted to show how members use the Club, from a couple traveling together to large multi-generational family reunions.

We know we have some great and varied members in the Club, and as such, we wanted to try and include as many of them as possible if they wanted to participate.

How did the pandemic affect the show?

The world shut down just as Plum Pictures was beginning to pitch the concept. Therefore, as most productions were put on hold in 2020, the conversations about putting the show together started back up again in 2021.

Watch The Big Posh Holiday Swap Sunday nights at 10 PM, exclusively on Channel 5 in the UK, beginning January 28th.

“When the hurricane hit with very little notice, we had ThirdHome guests in our home that night, Mary and Rich. They have now become lifelong friends brought together by an event that few people can say they have experienced.”

– ThirdHome Member, Ron W.

In the coastal town of Acapulco, Mexico, a vacation meant for relaxation and joy took an unexpected turn for ThirdHome guests Rich and Mary (and their hosts, Ron and Brenda). As Hurricane Otis rapidly escalated to a devastating Category 5 status, their plans were upended, and an unforeseen story of survival and friendship unfolded.

Ron and Brenda’s home, “La Roqueta,” in Acapulco, Mexico, prior to the storm.

Hundreds of miles away, vacationing in Puerto Vallarta, Ron and Brenda found themselves spared from the hurricane’s direct impact. However, their brand-new luxury home in Acapulco became an unexpected refuge for their guests, Mary and Rich.

With a mere two hours of notice before the hurricane hit, Ron contacted Rich, urging him to brace for the impending storm and to do what he could to help secure the home. As the cyclone escalated from a tropical storm to a formidable Category 5 hurricane, Mary and Rich, accompanied by their house staff, took shelter in the most secure space available—the laundry room.

Overnight, the hurricane transformed the once picturesque city into a scene reminiscent of a war-torn landscape, with devastation in every direction.

For 2-3 days, Ron and Brenda anxiously awaited any correspondence from Mary, Rich, and their live-in staff. All communication channels were lost. Ron and Brenda were relieved once a text finally arrived, reassuring them that everyone was safe. Mary and Rich had spent those past few nights sleeping on the master bedroom deck in a bid to counter the heat, using pool water for basic hygiene.

Despite the reported $15 billion in damages to the city, Ron and Brenda’s home miraculously fared better than expected. Though significant damage occurred, it was a fraction of what they had feared.

In the aftermath, Acapulco faced a dire situation with no electricity, water, or food. The city’s roads were impassable, and the airport was closed.

Taking matters into their own hands, Ron and Brenda hired a truck from Mexico City, loaded it with essential supplies, and sent it on an expedition to Acapulco. Luckily, the truck successfully navigated the debris-strewn streets.

Driven by a heartfelt commitment to humanity and genuine concern for their ThirdHome guests, Ron and Brenda took it upon themselves to personally cover the expenses for transporting Mary and Rich to Mexico City in the same truck, where upon arrival, they were able to find solace in a shower and safe hotel room to rest their heads.

Ron and Brenda met Mary and Rich in Mexico City that night, where the four friends gathered to share their stories and witness the destruction of their once-luxurious home.

The friendship forged during those challenging days extended beyond the four ThirdHome members to include Ron and Brenda’s live-in staff. The staff, despite their own concerns for their families’ welfare, continued to assist Mary and Rich throughout the ordeal. In turn, Mary and Rich supported their hosts by cleaning up around the property.

As the authorities later revealed the hurricane’s staggering force, reaching a catastrophic Category 6 status, the impact on Acapulco was truly one of the worst in world history. In the midst of challenges, the group’s journey is a powerful reminder of resilience, kindness, and the lasting bonds that can form between strangers.

“It truly is a story of strangers becoming friends, due to the chaos that ensued, proving that humanity is more good than not! It doesn’t matter the culture or the setting, good people should always do good things to help, love, and support! Not only have the 4 of us become friends, Ron, Brenda (my wife), and Rich and Mary, but our entire staff of 5-6 people have also become friends with Rich and Mary and will always remember for the rest of their lives the experience they survived together.— Ron W.

Planning a trip? Here are a few timely reasons to consider travel insurance:

Baggage Delay

As evidenced by multiple news articles, baggage woes are still a reality for travelers. While travel insurance can’t solve everything, you may appreciate the peace of mind offered by the Baggage Delay benefit on our plans. The benefit takes effect once the checked baggage has been delayed or misdirected by the common carrier for 12 hours or more on the way to or during your trip. The benefit on the plan designed for ThirdHome travelers may be reimbursed up to $500 for delayed baggage.

Medical Sickness Benefit

Besides coverage for Trip Cancellation, most travelers seek a travel insurance plan for emergency medical benefits in case of unexpected sickness or accident during the trip. During the summer months, for example, the heat has been top of mind as many regions have been experiencing extreme temperatures, and reports of heat-related illness are more common. As we head into fall and winter, cold and flu season becomes a concern. Travel insurance can alleviate some worries for your next trip, knowing you have coverage in case you unexpectedly become ill during your trip and require medical attention. The travel protection plan for ThirdHome travelers offers Emergency Medical Expense benefits of up to $500,000 in coverage.

Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) Optional Upgrade

Cancel For Any Reason (or CFAR) is one of the most sought-after benefits of travel insurance now because of the flexibility it offers—but it’s not offered by every provider. Some plans offer a lower reimbursement benefit and have very restrictive time-sensitive purchase requirements. Our plan offers up to 75% reimbursement with the CFAR upgrade, which can be included if you buy your plan within 14 days of the initial trip deposit.

ThirdHome is continually seeking the best partners to add to our portfolio. Over the past year the following partnerships were established further enhancing our global roster of exceptional homes, resorts, and destinations. Click any of the partners below to learn more about what they have to offer!

Now more than ever, ThirdHome travelers seek flexibility and extra protection to give them confidence in an otherwise uncertain time. Travel insurance can go a long way to ease your mind by providing protection for many common trip disruptions you may encounter. Let’s look at one important benefit included on the travel protection plan offered to ThirdHome members:

Benefit Spotlight: Emergency Medical Evacuation Coverage

While nobody likes to think about medical emergencies during travel, it’s important to consider your coverage options so you can travel with greater peace of mind. You may not be aware that Emergency Medical Evacuation coverage is not available on your personal medical insurance plan. This coverage is recommended any time you travel internationally, and especially if you are traveling to more far-flung destinations, such as Antarctica, Australia, Africa, etc. The cost of a medical evacuation can cost up to $30,000, and much more if it’s a complicated evacuation or originating from a more remote or distant destination. The tour protection plan for ThirdHome members includes coverage for up to $1,000,000 in Emergency Medical Evacuation expenses.

How Does It Work?

If an insured traveler is in a situation where a medical transport is needed, the traveler would first need to seek medical attention in their destination. Once they are under the care of a qualified physician (as defined by the insurance plan), arrangements may be made by the Travel Assistance Company contracted with the insurance provider. Any arrangement would be made in coordination with the attending physician at the destination. The Assistance Company would then coordinate with a hospital in the nearest location with “adequate medical facilities” to arrange the transport. The Assistance Company would be the key coordinator among all parties until the patient has returned home to the U.S. For complete coverage details, please refer to the policy document for your state of residence.

Note: a traveler MUST work through the Assistance Company to arrange a medical transport in order to have a viable claim. The transport may not be arranged independently.

Seeking More?

For travelers that seek even more than the emergency medical evacuation coverage offered in the comprehensive tour protection plan, we also offer AirMed. AirMed is a short-term medical evacuation program (non-insurance) for those looking for a flexible, specialized and elite air medical transport option. Travelers typically choose the AirMed option in addition to a comprehensive travel protection plan, not in place of it. You can learn more about AirMed and view pricing here.

Is Cancel For Any Reason Coverage Right for You?

With travel demand still soaring, but with persistent unpredictability all around us, you may be wondering how you can book a trip with more peace of mind.

Travel insurance is designed to protect your trip investment in case of something unforeseen that may cost you–for example, if you must cancel your trip, interrupt your trip after it’s started, or if you need to seek medical care during your trip. Standard travel insurance plans provide coverage for specific reasons, as outlined in the policy document.

What if you want more flexibility to cancel your trip for reasons not included in your policy? In this case, CFAR coverage may be a good option for you.

The CFAR benefit gives you added flexibility and financial security for your trip. This benefit allows you to cancel your trip for literally any reason at all and still be reimbursed for most of your pre-paid, non-refundable trip expenses.

What reasons might CFAR cover?

While these reasons wouldn’t be covered in the standard plan, you would have the flexibility to cancel your trip and be reimbursed for most of your pre-paid, non-refundable trip expenses if you bought the CFAR coverage.

What you need to know to buy and use CFAR coverage:

  1. You must buy your plan within 14 days of your initial trip deposit.
  2. You must add CFAR coverage at the time of plan purchase, and you must insure all non-refundable trip costs.
  3. If you make subsequent travel arrangements after plan purchase, you must also insure those subsequent arrangements within 14 days of payment of deposit for those arrangements.
  4. You must cancel your trip with your travel supplier at least two days prior to your scheduled departure.
  5. Then, contact USI or your plan claims administrator to file the claim.
  6. When you make a claim, you may be reimbursed up to 75% of your total pre-paid, non-refundable trip cost.

Note: CFAR is not available to residents of NY state, per NY Dept. of Insurance regulations.

Buying a second home has long been recognized as a profitable venture, and one particular niche that has gained significant popularity is investing in second homes in vacation markets. From potential financial gains to personal enjoyment, in this blog post, we will delve into the top five reasons why buying in a second home in a vacation market can be a smart financial move.

Potential for Rental Income:

One of the most compelling reasons to buy a second home in a vacation market is the potential for generating rental income. By renting out your property when you are not using it, you can offset a portion, if not all, of your mortgage and other expenses. This additional income stream can significantly enhance your overall return on investment. Websites such as Mashvisor provide valuable data and insights on rental income potential, occupancy rates, and rental market trends.

Appreciation and Long-Term Investment:

Buying a second home in a vacation market can be a wise long-term investment strategy. Popular vacation destinations tend to experience consistent appreciation in property values over time. The limited supply and high demand in such markets often result in increased property prices. Reliable real estate websites like Zillow and Redfin offer comprehensive data and market analysis, allowing you to make informed decisions about potential appreciation and investment prospects.

Diversification of Assets:

Owning a second home in a vacation market adds diversification to your investment portfolio. Real estate is a tangible asset that can provide stability and act as a hedge against inflation. It can offer a counterbalance to more volatile investment options such as stocks and bonds. By investing in a different geographic location, you reduce the risk of being solely dependent on the performance of your primary residence or local real estate market.

Tax Benefits:

Buying a second home can also bring various tax advantages. Depending on your specific circumstances and the jurisdiction, you may be eligible for tax deductions on mortgage interest, property taxes, and even some expenses related to maintenance and management of the property. It is advisable to consult with a qualified tax professional or refer to reputable financial websites like Investopedia (www.investopedia.com) for accurate information on tax benefits associated with second-home investments.

Personal Enjoyment and Lifestyle Enhancement:

Beyond financial gains, owning a second home in a vacation market provides the opportunity for personal enjoyment and lifestyle enhancement. Having a place to retreat and unwind in your favorite vacation destination offers convenience, comfort, and the chance to create lasting memories with family and friends. It also provides the flexibility to escape the stresses of everyday life and immerse yourself in the beauty and leisure activities of the vacation market you choose. Joining a home exchange club like ThirdHome can even further your enjoyment by expanding your vacation options. Unlike other home exchanges, they only allow second homes, vet all members, and also include access to resorts, private islands, and yachts.

Conclusion

Buying a second home in a vacation market can be a lucrative and rewarding endeavor. The potential for rental income, appreciation, asset diversification, tax benefits, and personal enjoyment make it an attractive option for investors seeking both financial returns and lifestyle enhancements. While travel websites can provide valuable information on vacation destinations, it is essential to consult credible investment-related sources such as Mashvisor, Zillow, Redfin, Investopedia, Bankrate, and other reputable financial platforms to make informed investment decisions. Remember to conduct thorough research, assess your financial goals, and seek professional advice when necessary before making any investment commitments.

Mike and Sue Challenger have been members of the Club since 2021. Keep reading to hear about their extraordinary South African safari experience by ThirdHome Adventures & Custom Travel.

Read their full testimonial below:

Whoever said, “You can’t teach old dogs new tricks,” hasn’t been on a ThirdHome Adventure, arranged by Liz Bates, Director Adventures & Custom Travel. At 70+, we had never been on a 4-wheeler (quad as they call them) in our lives, but that all changed at Leobo Private Reserve, the first leg of our three segments Adventure in South Africa.

Late Tuesday afternoon, Heidi, co-manager with her husband, Chris, took three of us out for our first ride around the upper savannah, and animal activity at that hour was prolific. Giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, kudos, warthogs, springbok, and impalas were everywhere. We loved every minute and looked forward to our next ride, which came on Thursday afternoon when we went for a 17 km ride down the rugged road to the hippo pond. And we did all of that just hours before our helicopter ride around the entire property to get an up-close aerial view of all the animals.

We experienced lunch out in the bush and dinner under the stars. We were busy from morning to night every day with more new things to do than we ever had done in one week. We would say our favorite experiences here were the quads and the helicopter ride witnessing all the many animals from above, and the sweeping river views. This experience at Leobo could not have been accomplished without Heidi and Chris and their excellent support staff. They spent many long hours making sure everything was perfect and that we were all having a fabulous time.

The second leg of our trip was to Cape Town and Table Mountain, the Wine Country, Cape Hope, and the South African Penguins. Everything was perfect, from meals and accommodations to our tour guide, Luci, and everything in between. The views from Table Mountain and Cape Hope were extraordinary, the wine countryside was beautiful, and the wines were delicious. Of course, our favorite experience here was the penguins, which were beyond adorable. Liz once again outdid herself on accommodations, activities, and lunches.

For our third and final segment, we went to Camdeboo Lodge. Wow, the adventures just keep continuing; nonstop action of early morning game drives to a shortcut over and down the mountain that literally had us on the edge of our seats and the edge of the road while returning to the lodge in the evening. On the first day, we encountered the Lions—that was a WOW moment for us! It was good to know they were not there to eat us but leisurely enjoy the day. The female cheetah, however, was not to be outdone. We slowly walked over to the bush with our guides, where she had her cubs. We didn’t see the cubs, but the cheetah was sitting there regally posing and letting us soak up her beauty. The second day was just as extraordinary. We had close encounters with elephants, rhinos, zebras, giraffes, vervet monkeys, and much more. We were so excited to see more of the Big Five. The staff and guides at Camdeboo were wonderful.

Lastly, to add to this once-in-a-lifetime trip and all its memories were the extraordinary new friends we made on this Adventure! Wade and Debbi were absolutely perfect hosts. We can’t wait for everyone to get together again for a reunion and experience more. We are all hooked on travel and are always looking for the next new experience and WOW moment. This Safari Adventure definitely gets a 5++. We feel it was definitely over the top and our favorite trip from all the places we have visited all over the world.

What are other members saying about this incredible South African safari experience?

We had such an amazing time with the group in South Africa! The entire trip was AWESOME!! We loved the trip! Our favorite Leobo experience was the helicopter ride! Absolutely beautiful and thrilling at the same time! Ruth’s WOW moment was capturing the video of giraffe running with the helicopter so close she felt like she could touch their ears! Favorite Cape Town experience was the coastal drive to the Cape of Good Hope. Views were breathtaking and the hike by the lighthouse was fantastic! We would rate the safari experience at a 5, actually higher!! And YES, we would like a reunion experience with the same group. Everybody, including us had so much fun. And we have made new friends–including with Wade and Debbi!! We all became friends very quickly and enjoyed our time together!

– Frank V. Member since 2021.

I must say I really wasn’t sure exactly what to expect on our trip to South Africa but what I can say it was beyond my expectations!!! It was an unbelievable trip with several amazing experiences that makes it hard to pick just one. We have traveled with groups before where we didn’t know most of the other people but this group we met on this trip were all amazing and wonderful and everyone got along so well. I really feel that all of us from this group will continue to stay in touch with each other and try to meet each other again whenever possible. It was so nice to see people helping each other if some could not keep up and everyone was very encouraging to help people try new things! This trip was so well organized with never a lack of something to do. If anyone asks what kind of trips ThirdHome organizes I would be very happy to say only the very best!

– Ruth V. Member since 2021.

WOW WOW WOW!!!! I can’t say enough about the fabulous trip at Leobo Private Reserve. From the moment we landed in South Africa, we had a smile on our faces. Leobo was beyond impressive…the adventures were unique, the food was scrumptious, the accommodations and views were breathtaking and of course, the company was extraordinary! This was the most memorable trip Milt & I have ever been on. We look forward to experiencing more ThirdHome Adventures in the future.

– Dee and Milt W. Members since 2015.

“If life is a tapestry made of our experiences and memories, we would like to thank the ThirdHome family for adding bold colors and golden threads to our fabric.
